Biography

Note: There is more than one year given for marriage to Simon LeFevre.

Birth

Elisabeth (Deyo) Lefevre was a wife of a Huguenot emigrant (1540-1790).

Birth Date: Between1651 and1655 in Mutterstadt, Mannheim, Electorate of the Palatinate, Holy Roman Empire, now Germany.

Death

Before 20 Sept 1703 in New Paltz, Ulster, New York Province.

According to her memorial plaque situated in the Old Huguenot Cemetery in New Paltz, New York, Elizabeth was born about 1655. General research has not discovered her birthplace, but it was either France or Mannheim, Palatinate, now Germany. No birth records have been located for Elizabeth.

Fleeing France, her family removed to the Palatinate after the Thirty Years War, and then to the New World where her father, Christian Deyo/Doyo, brother, Pierre Deyo, and first husband, Simeon/Simon Lefevre became three of twelve "patentees" establishing the New Paltz settlement in what is now the state of New York.[1]

Elizabeth reportedly arrived in Wiltwyck (present day Kingston), NY with her parents, Christian Deyo and Jeanne Verbeau, in 1665.[2][3]

She married 1) Simeon Lefevre (aka Simon Lefever), reportedly abt. 1678, while living in Hurley, Ulster, New York (no marriage record located). [3]. They lived on the original Lefevre patent along with Simon's brother, Andre, farming and raising their family.

Elizabeth and Simon had five known children:[2]

  1. Andries, b. unknown
  2. Abraham, b.1679
  3. Isaac, b.1683
  4. Jan, b.1685
  5. Maritje. b.1689

When her father died in 1686, Elizabeth inherited one-fifth of the Deyo patent, the estate equally divided between his five children.[4]

On 01 Aug 1689, Elizabeth donated a small house and lot to be used by schoolmaster John Cottin. She signed with a mark, her initials "ED."[3][5]

Simon may have died (or was very ill) before the baptism of their last-born child on 13 Oct 1689 as he was not in attendance; nonetheless, it is commonly reported he died in 1690.[5]

She married 2) Moses Cantine, before 1693. No marriage record has been located.

Elizabeth and Moses had one child:
  1. Peter Kantyn (Cantine), b. 21 May 1693.

Elizabeth and Moses lived on the Lefevre patent until abt. 1700 when they moved to Ponckhockie (Kingston), N.Y.. The Lefevre children remained on the patent with their bachelor uncle, Simon's brother, Andre (aka Andries). When Andre died with no direct heirs, the patent (including the 1/5th Deyo inheritance) was divided among the Lefevre children. Her oldest son, Andries, inherited the home lot and raised his family there.[3]

It seems clear that Elizabeth passed away before 20 Sept 1703 when her 2nd husband, Moses Cantine, married his 3rd wife, Mary de Witt[6] (also identified as Marytje Dubois, widow of Boudewyn De Witt in various record transcriptions.)[5][7]

No vital records for Elizabeth's death have been located.

Research Notes

Although it is most likely she died in Ponckhockie, Elizabeth's final resting site has never been identified. She is memorialized with a cenotaph at New Paltz's Old Huguenot Cemetery.Find A Grave: Memorial #40755176-Elizabeth Deyo Lefevre[8] A monument is also erected for the LeFevres in Wiltwyck Cemetery: The FindAGrave contributor notes Elizabeth's death date as 27 March 1741; however, the cenotaph has no dates of birth or death.[9]-Kc 13 May 2019

While 1903 author Ralph Le Fevre reports the Deyo family arrived in 1675, immigration records now available indicate Elizabeth, ae 10 [9 years old], arrived in 1665.[10] -Kc 13 May 2019

How do we resolve a death and or/ divorce issue for Elizabeth due to this data:

? Hoes: p 520, entry 210. 1703 Sep 20, marriage of Moses Cantain and Mary De Witt. Married on the presentation of a license

Further research indicates the suggested year of death for Deyo-233 is valid and the profile has been updated to better reflect this. I believe this is an appropriate merge request.

According to the billing graves link it does site Moses Cantines remarriage to another wife in 1703 so I would say the proposed merge is valid
Deyo-233 and Deyo-19 appear to represent the same person because: Not sure about the date of death on this one. It's pretty far off, but these still appear to be profiles for the same wife. Please take a look at the available information to see if you can sort out the death date.

Thanks!
