Biography

Research Notes

Maria DeWitt

1. May be the daughter of Peter DeWitt and Dorothea Volckers

2. 20 Sept 1703: Moses Cantain married for his 3rd wife Mary De Witt. In 1717 Moses Kantyn (Sr) and Marytjen Debou witnessed the baptism of Moses Kantyn, son of Pieter Kantyn. (Research needed on Marytje Debou. A series of assumptions may have been made regarding her surname--that it was a misspelling for DuBois, and that she was married to Moses when this may not be the case as baptismal patrons were not always husband and wife).

3a.3b. A Billion Graves contributor states she was Marytje DuBois, sourcing Kenneth Hasbrouck's book "The Deyo Family." No reference to a Mary, Maria or Marytje DuBois, wife of Moses Cantine has been located in Hasbrouck's book.

4a.4b. Some sources indicate she was the widow of Boudewyn de Wit and that her original surname was also de Wit. Boudewyn de Wit was the son of Nicolas de Wit or possibly Johannes de Wit and came from a large extended family. In his 1703 will, he mentions wife Maria d'Witt. If DeWit was also her maiden name, Maria may have been a cousin, 2nd cousin, etc. --research needed).

Note: Possibly Maria Dubois DeWitt or Maria Debou DeWitt, but evidence regarding Dubois surname is not in any vital records yet discovered. The most relevant documents are the will of Boudewyn de Wit and the Kantyn/De Witt marriage record, so this name is chosen for her profile until evidence confirms/denies this identity.

Re: 1717 record: Marytje Debou of the baptismal record, repeated as Mary Dubois on Billion Graves memorial, may be Maritje (Le Fevre) DuBois, d/o Moses Cantine's 2nd wife Elisabeth Deyo: his step-daughter. This might make sense as the baptism would've been for her nephew, s/o Peter Cantine her half-brother. -per C-213 07:29, 17 August 2019 (UTC)
