John Lakin, baptized 1 November 1628 in Ruddington, Nottinghamshire, England, was the son of William Lakin[1] and his wife Mary ______.[2]
"John Lakin, my yongest sonne," was named in the will of his father dated 7 February 1632/3. His mother remarried in 1637 to William Martin and, in 1644, Mary and William Martin and Mary's sons, John and William Lakin, immigrated to New England. William Martin settled in Reading, Massachusetts. John Lakin was residing in Groton by 1656 when he is found on a petition to the General Court regarding a tax abatement and the town's boundaries.[2]
John married Mary Bacon, daughter of Michael Bacon of Woburn, Massachusetts and his first wife, Mary _______.[2] No marriage record is found; their marriage date is estimated based on the birth of their first child. They had the following children, all probably born at Groton:
Mary, born c. 1658, died c. 1688, married Henry Willard[2]
John, born c. 1660, died before March 1696/7, married Sarah Wheeler and did not have children[2]
Sarah, born 4 February 1661/2, died in Grafton 15 March 1740, married Benjamin Willard[2]
William, born 12 May 1664, died young[2] on 10 December 1672[3]
Abigail, born 13 March 1666/7, died after 1722, married first Samuel Parker and second to Robert Dickson/Dixon[2]
Ens. Joseph, born 14 April 1670, died 1 April 1747, married Abigail Lakin, his 1st cousin[2]
Benjamin, born 6 November 1672, died 7 September 1753, married Elizabeth Lakin[2]
Josiah, born 14 September 1675, died before 14 November 1723, married Lucy _____[2]
Lydia, born c. 1677, married first John Shipley and second to Jonathan Boyden[2]
John and Mary lived in Groton, Massachusetts after their marriage and remained there for the rest of their lives.[2] He served there as a sergeant and an ensign in the military company.[3]
Shortly before his death in 1697, John conveyed his property to his children in a series of deeds. Named in these deeds are: his "eldest son" Joseph, sons Josiah and Benjamin, daughters Lydia Lakin (single) and Abigail, wife of Samuel Parker. After John's death, his widow transferred other property to daughters Lydia Shipley and Sarah Willard.[3]
John Lakin died 21 March 1697/8 Groton.[2][4] Mary was still living on 22 October 1701,[2] when she acknowledged a deed.[3] Her date of death is unknown.
