Biography

Thomas Jordan, Jr. was the son of Thomas and Lucy (Corker) Jordan, and was born in 1634.[1][2] He married Margaret Brashare (Brasseur) in 1660. She was the daughter of Robert Brashare and the sister of Mary Brashare who married Thomas Cocke, Cicely Reynolds Baley Jordan Farrar's grandson.

Margaret Brashare was one of the first known converts to Quakerism in the Virginia colony. She was born in 1642.[3] She became a Quakeress when she was sixteen in the year 1658.[4] Soon after her marriage in 1660, her husband, Thomas, also converted to the faith: "in ye yeare 1660 hee received ye truth and Abode faithful in it."[1]

Hinshaw's ENCYCLOPEDIA OF AMERICAN QUAKER GENEALOGY notes, "Thomas Jordan was probably the most influential Quaker in lower Virginia being a man of position and substance."[Vol and page citation needed]

In 1661, he was held, as he writes, "in six weeks imprisonment for being taken at a meeting at my own house and released by the King's proclamation." The latter royal intervention speaks of the influence of the Jordan family in both Virginia and in England.[5]

In the same year, Thomas Jordan also "suffered" the following abuses for his Quaker beliefs: ". . . for being taken at a meeting at Robert Lawrence's and bound over to the court of Nansemond for refusing to swear according to their wills and against the commands of Christ, was sent up to Jamestown a prisoner for upwards of ten months. Presently John Blake took away my three servants and left my wife in a distressed condition with a young child at her breast . . . which servant was kept nine weeks and released by order of the Governor. There was taken by John Blake, sheriff of Nansemond, two feather beds, two feather bolsters, and furniture which together with other goods amounted to 3,907 lbs. tobacco and also a serving man who had three years to serve. There was taken by Thomas Godwin, sheriff, ten head of cattle amounting to 5,507 lbs." This testimonial was signed, "Thomas Jordan, Chuckatuck, 1st month, 1661."[5]

In 1666, Thomas Jordan [II] received a land grant of 550 acres in Nansemond County adjoining the land of Jeremiah Rutter and Hopken Howell.[6] The Norfleet family owned land adjacent to them.

Thomas and Margaret Jordan had ten sons, as follows:

  1. Thomas [III], born 1/6/1660 married Elizabeth Burgh.
  2. John, born 6/17/1663 married Margaret Burgh.
  3. James, born 11/23/1665 married Elizabeth Ratcliff.
  4. Robert, born 7/11/1668 married Mary Belson.
  5. Richard, born 6/6/1670 married Rebecca Ratcliff.
  6. Joseph, born 7/8/1672 married Ann ___.
  7. Benjamin, born 7/18/1674 married ?.
  8. Matthew, born 11/1/1676 married Dorothy Bufkin (widow).
  9. Samuel, born 2/15/1679 married Elizabeth Fleming.
  10. Joshua, born 6/1681 married ?.

Thomas Jordan "departed this life the eighth day of the tenth month of the sixth day of the week about the second hour of the afternoon and was buried the 12th day of the said month on the third day of the week of the year 1699."[1] As his memorial notes, in part, " . . . he stood in opposition against the wrong and deceitful spirits, having suffered the spoiling of his goods and the imprisonment of his body for the truth['s] sake and continued in the truth unto the end of his days..."[7]

Marriage

Note: There is a conflict in the "International Marriage Records...." for Thomas Jordan and his wife Margaret Brasseur. His record gives marriage year as 1657 and hers 1658.[Note: This source contains much undocumented information and should not be considered a primary source.]

The marriage is given as 1659 by Harrison.[5]

Date: 1657
Place: Virginia[8]
Date: 23 MAR 1657
Place: Isle of Wight, Virginia[citation needed]
Husband: Thomas Jordan
Wife: Margaret Brasseur

Research Notes

There are additional land grants to a Thomas Jordan in 1682[2] and 1684[3] for 500 acres in Surry County. It is not certain if this is this Thomas or perhaps his son.

He passed away in 1700.

The following March, Susannah Bressie, widow, for love and affection … to her nephew, William Jones of York County, gave him 8,000 pound of tobacco, and deeded over to him all her land and plantation where she lived was to be his, until the gift deed was fulfilled. …It is intended for better establishment of land where she now lives in the Upper Parish of Isle of Wight, and she bequeaths her right and title to Mathew Jordan, to descend to the longest liver of them. Her second husband was Matthew Jordan of Nansemond County.

Jordan-192 and Jordan-14698 appear to represent the same person because: Clear duplicate. Same son.

Good morning,

At the suggestion of this G2G thread, I have added the Quakers Project as a co-manager of this profile and included the Project box.

I took a look at the change history and see that there have been a good number of duplicated profiles for this man. If the non-project co-managers feel there is a need for Project Protected Profile status, please comment on the profile and that will be added.

Thanks,

Debi - Quakers co-leader

Is there any source for the date of marriage? The International Marriage Records index information should probably be removed as it is not based upon documents. If she became Quaker in 1658 (per her meeting minutes memorial) and he in 1660 (per his meeting minutes memorial) there is no record of her marriage out of unity. Perhaps one or both records are simply approximate recollections at their times of death. There does not seem to be a Quaker marriage record though Chuckatuck records are incomplete and Fox himself "encouraged" better record keeping during his visit there.

Lacking evidence to the contrary, I would go with Harrison's date of 1659 given the meticulous nature of his research.

Grace,

You might descend from Robert who is the son of Thomas,,,but this does not mean these profiles should be merged.

Jordan-610 and Jordan-192 appear to represent the same person because: Y-DNA for Thomas and Robert Jordan shows that I descend from them. I would like to merge the Robert Jordan I created with Jordan-610
