Thomas Jordan I[1]

Thomas Jordan (also recorded as Jorden) b. in England in say 1599, came to America in the ship "Diana" in 1623 at the age of 24 according to Hotten who lists him as an inhabitant of Virginia as of 16 Feb 1623 (the date of his listing).[2][3] His possible father Samuel is believed to have sailed to the Americas in 1609 leaving Thomas and his siblings behind in England.[4]

From the "Muster (census) of the Inhabitants of Pasbehays & the Maine taken the 30th of January 1624 belonging to the corporation of James Citty" he is listed under "Muster of the Governor's Men at Pasbehaighs...Thomas Jorden aged 24 came in the Diana."[2] Governor's Men refers to Governor Yardley but whether or not he was a soldier is unknown.

He was a member of the council or House of Burgesses from Isle of Wight County in 1629 and 1632.[3][5][6] On 2 Jul 1635 he was granted 900 acres known as the "Great Indian Field Neck" near the head of Warrasquioacke River, beginning at the western side of an old Indian town.[3] This was near the head of Pagan River. He was granted this land by Sir John Harvey, Knight, for transporting 18 persons. One branch of the Jordan family still possessed this grant until 1840. [7][8][6]

He followed the Puritan trek to Nansemond as he patented land there soon after receiving his Isle of Wight grant.[6]

He married Lucy Corker (daughter of Capt William Corker of Surry County, Virginia and his wife Lucy White Corker).[4]

Children

Boddie in his Southside Virginia Families[9] gives two children by first wife Jane (Browne) Spencer with a marriage date of "about 1679":

  • Jane
  • Mary (m Francis Sowerby)

There is disagreement among well-respected researchers on the children of Thomas and Lucy:

  • Thomas b 1634 Isle of Wight[4]
  • Richard
  • Phillis (Boddie in Southside Virginia Families gives Phillis as the only child by second wife Lucy Corker.)[9]

Death

Thomas' date of death is unknown but estimated to be about 1688, however, some researchers place his death as early as 1644.

Research Notes

There are obvious date issues with the upstream profile dates both in the Jordan and Corker families even though the documentation on the families taken separately appears to be approximately correct. These are being researched as of Feb 2020. - T Stanton

Contrary information on maiden name for marriage to Corker:

Unverified/Unsourced Information

His land grant of 1624 was for land that the Virginia Company had given his father, Samuel, but the father had never taken out the patent on the tract.

Is the above unsourced comment in reference to the following? Patent Books Land Patent 1620 "Samuel Jordan ... see Land Book VIII, p 125; referred to in JCGC, Sept 12, 1625, p 76" "Journal of the Council and General Court". Jordan grant (listed as a footnote in v 1) listed again in v 2, from Patent Book 8 (dated 1690). This seems to be copied from some earlier record, since the land transaction took place in 1620. Cited in Nugent, Nell Marion. Cavaliers and Pioneers: Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents and Grants, Volume One: 1623-1666, Richmond: Virginia State Library, 1992. • Patent Books 1-5.

Additional information can be found from this link: https://www.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/jordan/10727/ Some links from this no longer valid, most to original early records remain intact.

His Father Samuel Jordan and his mother Frances Baker had the following children in England Note: there is no documentation of Samuel Jordan ever marrying someone named Frances Baker. Frances Baker is fictional.):

  1. Anne Maria Jordan 1596–1630
  2. Robert Jordan 1598–1622
  3. Thomas Jordan Sr. 1600–1684
  4. Samuel Jordan 1608–164?

According to https://www.geni.com/people/Major-Thomas-Jordan/6000000010975939486, this is NOT the same Thomas who married Lucy Corker.

Geni is not a primary source. There are two women named Lucy Corker. The project is aware some research does not believe the wives of this Thomas are known.

With all due respect to the many fine researchers who have shared their work, I do not see Adventurers of Purse and Person cited, nor followed. This is problematic in terms of helping those who may have interest in joining the Jamestowne Society or FFV. I would second Scott McClain's 02 Dec 2021 comment and at the very least disconnect the parents. AP&P Volume 2, p. 365 says that the name of his wife is not known and his children were Thomas and Margaret. Footnote 7 mentions Richard (married Elizabeth Reynolds) as a possible child and refers the reader to REYNOLDS.

You are saying that APP states this man’s wife is unknown? That would not agree with the sources cited on the profile. We will need to review that and it has been some time since we have looked at the date issues mentioned in research notes. I should add that the project does not follow any one researcher as being a definitive source.

The connection to current parents Samuel Jordan (abt.1578-1623) and Frances (Unknown) Baker (abt.1580-abt.1608) is disputed based on the profile text and there does not appear to be any source cited for this connection. Is there any reason not to disconnect these parents and include a Disputed Origins section explaining why?

Note: 2021-05-11 Thomas Jordan born about 1600 is 58 years older than his wife Lucy Corker born about 1658.

2021-05-11. DISCONNECTED PARENTS 2021-05-11. Per request, Nicholas [Jordan-10077] and Joseph [Jordan-10075] were disconnected from parents Lucy Rose [Corker-2] and Thomas Jordan Sr. [Jordan-267] due to a lack of sources. Profile Manager Richard J., Amherst Co., Virginia.

Keep in mind that Lucy is his second wife, not the first, and that her date of birth is (if I recall correctly) an estimate. There are unresolved dating errors in this family as well as discrepancies where information between father and son Thomas as well as mother and daughter Lucy are conflated. The conflations are found in published research as well as throughout internet genealogy land. I believe most of the conflation has been taken care of but not all. The Southern Colonies profile team is working to resolve the issues. I think you found the G2G on the topic. Most of the duplicate profiles have been eliminated. However, there are a number of children attached here which are not found in documents or through published research.

Hi US Southern Colonies! I have added the project account to this project-protected profile & will swap templates for Virginia & US Southern Colonies (to complete transfer of profile).

I created an "Unmatched Merge" for Jordan-14189 and Jordan-267 as it appears they are the same person. One profile has a lot more information than the other and there is a large difference in the "about death year" but all else is the same. I uploaded a GED.com and also feel there are three profiles for his father, Samuel Jordan. As both are my great grandfathers, please let me know if I can help in any way. Cheers! Becky

HI, Becky. There are any number of issues in the Jordan (and Corker) families some of which are notated on this profile. Obviously the idea of a first marriage in 1679 is incompatible with much of the other info on this profile. If that is from Boddie (I forget without looking), note that Boddie makes a number of errors with these families. There may still be multiple profiles for Samuel, many have already been merged. What we are now avoiding is any additional merges until the information discrepancies between the different profiles are rectified. It has never been conclusively proven that Samuel is his father; some vehemently disagree with Samuel as father. The profile of Samuel that is project managed (Jordan-224) and attached to this profile is that which WikiTree believes to be the current best information.

Thank you for the quick and very thorough response regarding everything I rambled about above. I think it would be a good idea to leave these comments on the page here so that others may read this before scrambling their heads as I did...

Lastly, for my own notes (and leaving Samuel out of the equation) is it still in agreement that this Thomas Jordan was a "Sr", he married a Lucy Corker and they had a son, Thomas Jordan Jr (m. Margaret Brasseur)? Those are 9th and 10th great grandparents of mine- or so I had been told- and I want to make sure my tree here is as detailed as in other places. Cheers! Becky Elizabeth (Simmons-11603)

Yes, the relationship between Thomas and Thomas is documented as is the information found on the son Thomas' profile. And, all of that makes us 10th cousins one time removed. Greetings, cousin.

Jordan-3398 and Jordan-267 are not ready to be merged because: Jordan-3398 is unsourced, has substantially different dates, etc. Will place this within the overall Jordan and Corker clean-up but these may not be meant to represent the same person.

Jordan-3398 and Jordan-267 do not represent the same person because: Different parents, very different age at death, very little in common

You have Thomas Jordan snr born about 1600 in Wiltshire but I can't see any source for this, am I missing something?
posted by Malcolm Hoare
See the Hotten citation for his age being 24 when he came in 1623. The Wiltshire location is not substantiated by anything and should be changed to read England. That he is the son of Samuel is disputed by some. There are significant date issues with the generation of Jordan which marries into the Corker family. See this G2G started to work on the various issues: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/984988/want-to-help-clean-up-early-virginia-corker-family Additional research is being done at Library of Virginia in the next two weeks to consult sources not available online. Any assistance you can provide is most welcome.

There is a first wife found in some records Jane (Browne) Spencer, widow of Capt Robert Spencer and oldest child of Col William Browne. Boddie: Southside Virginia Families I:170 is one place this is seen. Boddie says Col Browne was an administrator of Thomas' estate. How old was Col Browne at that point?

Just a comment to let the other PMs know this profile has been re-sourced and rewritten. Is anyone else interested to see if we can prove or disprove that his father is Samuel Jordan? I think it is an open question unless documentation is found of him taking over a 1624 land grant that his father never followed through on. I am having trouble locating what land grant to which this could refer.

This entry on Thomas Jordan obviously refers to the same person previously entered as Thomas Jordan, Sr, (Jordan-267). Thomas was definitely not the son of Samuel Jordan and Cecily. The death date of 1644 agrees with the unsourced information in my own files rather than the more generally accepted 1688.

Most of this profile is wrong. His son is most certainly who it says it is, and he was born in 1600, somewhere in England. His father probably was indeed who the profile says it is, but there is zero proof.

The names of his mother and wife are not known, however, his mother was certainly not the Cicely who married Samual Jordan.

All this is in the very reputable book Adventurers of Purse and Person, 4th edn. Vol 2 pp 363-365.

The profile needs correction.

posted by James McDonald
What is the evidence that his wife was Lucy Corker and his father Samuel Jordan? All the reputable sources I know say his wife really is unknown and while his father is probably Samuel Jordan, its not proven. This is especially true of Adventurers of Purse and Person.
