Biography

Margaret was born September 1642 possibly in Chuckatuck, Nansemond, Virginia to Robert Brashare (the spelling of the original documents), a French Huguenot.[1][2][3] Her date of birth is sometimes seen as 17 Jul 1642. None of the primary source records cited give the day of the month. The month is listed as 7th which on the old calendar is September. These records do not give her location of birth and their appearance in the Chuckatuck records is not proof of birth location. Given the movements of her father Robert Brasseur as indicated by his land grants (1636 and 1638 in Nansemond) it is possible she was born in Nansemond rather than Isle of Wight as is sometimes seen. This is complicated by a large land grant in Nansemond given her father well after her birth for the transport of his family (this in and of itself is not indicative of when the persons could have been transported).

Margaret married Thomas Jordan (Jr). The date is sometimes seen as 23 Mar 1657 but this appears to be without primary source documentation. In the Quaker Meeting minutes memorial to Thomas it states he became a Quaker in 1660 and thus a marriage of 1657, if that date is correct, would not be found in the Meeting minutes. It is interesting to note that Margaret's memorial in the Meeting minutes indicates she became a Quaker in 1658 at about age 16. There is no record that she married out of unity so perhaps one or the other dates of joining the Society of Friends is slightly incorrect.

Margaret Brashear, daughter of Puritan Robert Brashear, married Thomas Jordan whose origins were at Jordan's Journey in Surry County. The Isle of Wight Courthouse has accounts of meetings that name members and give insight to customs. The original record may be seen on microfilm in Latter-Day Saints Family History Centers. The first birth date on record in Isle of Wight is of the child of Thomas and Alice Hollowell, born in 1647.

Margaret passed away 7 Dec 1708 in Nansemond, Virginia.[4][2][3]

A memorial concerning her by her son Ben appears in the Meeting record and is transcribed in part by Hinshaw[4]: convinced of the Truth about the 16 yr of her ae; a sufferer with my father both by confinement & also the spoiling of her Goods; about the 63 yr of her ae shee was taken with an indisposition of boddy wch continued near 3 yr; mentioned by eldest brother's w, & severall of my brothers; d at 6 of the clock att night in remarkable quietness the 7th day of the 10 mo in the yr 1708 having lived about 66 yr & survived my father 9 yr lacking 18 hr.

The Huguenot Society's ancestor list here includes the following "Virginia Huguenots not at Manakintowne" (indicated by #):
  • BRASHEARS, BRASSIERU, Margaret, Benjamin, Robert #

I didn't think that the Margaret listed would be this Margaret, but see http://www.next1000.com/family/GRUBB/brashearRobt.html (which, at first glance, seems to imply they would be Robert & two of his children - this Margaret and her brother Benjamin - while reading closer seems to have siblings Robert & Benjamin in Virginia c1637... something to research, if this is your family).

Cheers, Liz

There are considerable significant problems now found in WT in the early Brashear family. Margaret, subject of this profile, is attached to someone other than her clearly identified father. The profile presently attached as father has another profile (perhaps his sibling or son) whose biographical information is now almost identical. I'm not certain the various links back to Charles Brashear and his book(s) are current...finding a number of dead-ends various places and the work is not readily available (not found digitized anywhere so far). Looking for further info if the publication is available--bits and pieces get cited in various places but usually absent the documentation behind the reasoning.

The following March, Susannah Bressie, widow, for love and affection … to her nephew, William Jones of York County, gave him 8,000 pound of tobacco, and deeded over to him all her land and plantation where she lived was to be his, until the gift deed was fulfilled. …It is intended for better establishment of land where she now lives in the Upper Parish of Isle of Wight, and she bequeaths her right and title to Mathew Jordan, to descend to the longest liver of them. Her second husband was Matthew Jordan of Nansemond County.

There appear to be multiple conflations and confusions in the family. One of the duplicates is the niece of the other. I also think Benois Brasseur's mother is incorrect.

Brasseur-81 and Brasseur-39 appear to represent the same person because: the dates and places of birth and death are not in conflict. They have the same husband and son, Thomas. The parents are in conflict; the only one with a source is Robert Brasseur.

Brasseur-81 and Brasseur-39 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth date/location, same husband, same death date/location (almost), same son Thomas. Need additional reliable source on death date, one is likely the burial date.
