Whether he existed or not, John Fleming-596 "1st Earl of Wigton, 6th Lord Fleming did not have a son Thomas. He also could not be the same as the son Alexander Fleming. This (fictional) person is being removed as a son of John Fleming, 1st Earl of Wigton.
posted by Joe Cochoit
Where are the sources of his non-existenance? Is there proof of the newspaper article from 1880, what newspaper did it appear in? Who is the actual husband and father of the family connected to this fictional person? Why does he remain connected to John Fleming?

The connection also shows up as confident between John as father. How can this be made into not confident?

Could this be the illegitimate child mentioned in his father's bio? The bio, also, does not show Thomas as one of his children by either wife.

In this message written on October 20, 2010, a DNA study was done to confirm the relationship between the Flemings of Virginia and the Earls of Wigton. https://www.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/fleming/6212/

So I am confused. Is this person fictitious or not? There seems to be tons of sources, both genetic and historical.

I agree! Maybe Mary Stewart or someone else could explain in more detail?

Fleming-2721 and Fleming-1141 appear to represent the same person because: Same Ancestry.com GEDcom sources; same info repeated. Only birth date is slightly earlier.

Fleming-3645 and Fleming-1141 appear to represent the same person because: Est. birth within 5 years, same death place. Children are attached, but look wrong because some born in Scotland, some in Virginia. From a GEDcom with no original sources that I saw.

Thanks Ila! The tale just won't go away.

This person never existed. He was invented in a newspaper column in the 1880s and has been debunked many times. There are NO records of a Thomas Fleming in Virginia.
posted by Mary Elizabeth Stewart
What about his parents and/or children? Is this an isolated profile issue or is his entire family tree suspect?

Can you please explain what you mean with sources? I'm so confused. There seems to be various sources of evidence that he did exist. While it may not be concrete documentation, why is it not valid? And what newspaper columns and debunking are you referring to? I've googled it and can't find what you're referencing, thanks.
