Mary Wingfield was the daughter of Charles Hudson (See discussion at World Connect). Hudson's 1745 will named John Wingfield, his son-in-law, as an executor. The will lent Prospect, a Goochland (later Albemarle) County plantation, to his daughter Mary for life, after which it descended to his grandson Charles Wingfield. The will also left a legacy to his granddaughter Rebecca Wingfield.
The lands of John Wingfield, were taxed to his widow, Mary Wingfield after 1771. Mary Wingfield must have died about 1779 since an estate of John Wingfield was being settled then and the 1782 Land Tax Book shows the 350 acres of Mary Wingfield divided between her sons, John Wingfield, Jr., and Thomas Wingfield.
Note N1008In 1762 Mary Wingfield deeded her son Charles 270 acres on "Prospect" on which he was then living. Since all of the land would belong to Charles eventually, why did she deed him only half? She seems to have let William occupy half the property until her death in 1779, for William was still in Albemarle when he signed the Albemarle Declaration of Independence in 1776, along with his nephew William. Albermarle Deed Book 3 p 157, 13 May 1762 (hereafter D Bk). Apparently the slaves of John Wingfield were sold in 1779, since Albemarle D Bk 7 p 428 concerns the sale of one slave from the estate of John Wingfield deceased to John's son John in Hanover. The sale of the slave is taken as an indicatioin of the death of Mary Wingfield.

The Mary Hudson that I claim as mother of Rebecca Wingfield is the one whose father was Charles Hudson and whose husband was John Wingfield. A quality review of her documentation is given at http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=butchrose&id=I11605 and at the link shown for her, as John Wingfields wife. Marriage is given as 1720, but there is only guesswork for her dates of birth and death. I think the merge has the right people, and I appreciate your support.
I have reviewed some of the published early Wingfield ancestry as well as some critiques. Im not convinced that there is support for the ancestry much earlier than Thomas Wingfield (Johns father and Marys father-in-law) but I need to review it again.
