Cheryl was born in Southern California during the 1960s and was raised in Northern California in the beautiful coastal redwood country. Cheryl moved to Washington State in 1984 for her education and there found her life's work. Learning American Sign Language came easily to her, feeling more like something remembered than the acquisition of new knowledge. Cheryl connected strongly with the Deaf community and felt a passion for advocating for them and working alongside them. In her early 20's, she worked with a dedicated group from the Deaf community to found a non-profit all volunteer-run service center of the Deaf, to provide much needed services to the deaf and hard of hearing population in a ten county area in southeastern Washington State. Within a short time, the government of the State of Washington recognized the tremendous work being done by the volunteers at the SEWSCDHH, and awarded two state contracts to the center, allowing the first paid staff to be hired. Years later, she served three terms on the center's executive board. Additionally, she, alongside a Deaf instructor, co-taught American Sign Language at the university and college level for 20 years.
Cheryl became an interpreter for the Deaf in the 1980s. In 2005, the Southeastern Washington Service Center of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing named her the first Interpreter of the Year, awarding her a commemorative plaque that states, "Your Hands Show Your Heart." She continues to work in this field, primarily in college and university settings.
In 2008, another of Cheryl's passions resulted in the founding of another non-profit 501(c)3 organization--this time to save the lives of adoptable pets who were dying in a local kill shelter. With two other animal loving friends, Cheryl founded Mikey's Chance Rescue, an all-volunteer run foster-home based organization, in October 2008, and over the years more than 15,000 dogs and cats have been saved from death. Cheryl handed off the administration of the organization to the next generation of volunteers in 2014, but continues to help by fostering.
Cheryl continues to reside with her family in Washington State in a lovely green valley nestled against the Blue Mountains.
Personal statement: I have held a long-time interest in family genealogy, which began when I was a young child, when my maternal grandmother, our family historian and also an officer for the John W. Dawes Family Association, began to teach me about our family history. I have done some work on it over the years and am eager to add to my knowledge and share with others.
I am especially interested in my family lines:
Paternal:
Maternal:
Earlier maternal ancestral surnames I am researching/following:
Notes: My paternal and maternal Witt lines connect; my paternal and maternal Harris lines do not. Common Witt ancestor: John Witt (abt.1645-bef.1715), immigrant from England to Virginia.
Current project: While my family had some early and staunch abolitionists, sadly there were those that also held slaves. I am attempting to document the enslaved, both of my ancestors and others, in hopes it might help someone else who is trying to connect with a previously enslaved ancestor. Thus, the part of the family that held slaves in Virginia is my current focus. I am a member of the US Black Heritage Project: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:US_Black_Heritage, and I lead the US Black Heritage Project Virginia Team.
Gateway, Notable, and Civil War Ancestors:
Digital Afterlife Instructions: this note is my permission that upon my demise or incapacity, for my family firstly, and then secondly, the WikiTree staff, to manage the profiles where I act as PM, in any way they see fit, as long as this is in line with the Honor Code and preserves the privacy of living people. We have two google groups - one for discussion (https://groups.google.com/g/wtvirginiadiscuss) and one for managed profiles (https://groups.google.com/g/wtvirginia). Send a join request if you'd like to join either or both (include your WikiTree ID so we know it's you and use the email account you use for Wikitree.)
When you get a chance, please add your info on the Virginia Team page (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Virginia_Team). Just click "edit" on this page and add your "Wiki Link", a colon, and then why you wanted to join, or your Virginia family information. Just look at what others have written and you can get an idea of what to write :)
If you haven't already looked it over, Virginia Project (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Virginia) is the main project page and has lots more information.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Cheers,
Sjana, Virginia Project Coordinator

Thank you so much for volunteering to be a part of the Black Heritage Project!
There are two things I need you to do. One is to please pick a team you would like to be active in. The current teams are: 1) US Black Heritage Profile Improvement Teams Creating, categorizing, writing biographies, connecting, sourcing, adding stickers. 2) US Black Heritage Topical Teams Focusing on the people of historical events, notables, and various topics of interest from the history of the African American community. 3) US Black Heritage Slavery Teams Focusing on various aspects of identifying descendants of enslaved people and connecting members to their ancestors. 4) US Black Heritage Documentation Teams Creating and maintaining project help pages.
You are welcome to join as many teams as you wish and change teams at any time.
I would also ask that you join us in our Google Discussion Group so we can have your input on important topics and so we can collaborate on profiles and projects. You either need a Gmail address or access to a Google account to access the group. Please let me know which email address you would like me to use to add you.
I look forward to collaborating with you to meet the goals of our project.
Thanks for taking responsibility for Orphaned Profiles. This After Adopting Orphans FAQ explains the special attention adopted profiles will sometimes need from their profile managers. One quick way to find the profiles you adopted is by searching your Contributions List for the word "adopted" and "manager." You can find a quick link to your Contributions List in the My WikiTree dropdown menu.
If you will be working with any profiles needing GEDCOM cleanup, the AGC tool can help with formatting so that you can concentrate on the research. You can read more about it in the WikiTree AGC FAQ.
Let me know if you have any questions on how to find and record sources, merge duplicates, clean up GEDCOM biographies, and interpret the Suggestions report. I'm here to help!

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!
Pre-1700 ancestors can be shared by many descendants, so collaboration is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.
The United States Project or the England Project may fit your research focus. If not, use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find other possibilities. Review the project page to learn about resources and guidelines as well as how to collaborate with the project members.
Have questions? Ask in the comments section of my profile.
Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles that you manage or edit. (See: Pre-1700 Reliable Sources).

Thank you for joining us! I wanted to check in with you to see how things are going. How do you like WikiTree so far? Have the tips in the New Member How To Pages been helpful or have they left you with questions? Did the profile managers respond to your posts? It is really helpful for them to interpret your comments if you provide the source to go with it. So the real document, author location etc, preferably with the link to the scan. I hope they respond soon.
Please let me know if you have any questions about WikiTree. To contact me, log in to WikiTree and go to your profile. Use the ‘Reply’ link below my comment to be sure that I will be notified. You can also click my name to send a private message, or post a comment on my profile page. It's really is great to have you on board.
Michel ~ WikiTree Messenger
P.S. To find reliable sources for your profiles, go to the Family Tree & Tools tab; select Genealogy Research and scroll down near the bottom of that list and select Research with RootsSearch. There are over 20 websites to access from there.
Congratulations on becoming an Honor Code Signatory of WikiTree! How excellent! I'm a volunteer greeter, here to answer any questions you may have about WikiTree.
Our New Member How-To pages can help you get started adding profiles or just learning your way around.
Welcome to the community! I hope your WikiTree journey will be as fruitful and enjoyable as mine has been.
