James Renfrey Hawke was born in Cornwall circa 1838. He was baptised at Kea, Cornwall, on 15 March 1838, son of Richard Hawke, miner, and Jane (Jenifer) Renfrey of Baldhu, the third of their eight children.[1][2]
James' family moved to Staffordshire around 1848, and appears in the 1851 census at Warslow:[3]
Richard Hawke 43 copper miner (b Devonshire, Brinter Parish), Jane 43 (b Kea Cornwall), Richard 19 (b Kea), William 17 (b Kea), James 14 (b Kea), John 11 (b Kea), Mary Jane 7 (b Kea), Maria 11 (b Kea), Nathaniel 2 (b Warslow), Jane Renfrew 71 (wifes mother, b Kea).
Later in 1851, James migrated to South Australia, aged 14, aboard the Reliance.[4]
James worked as a miner at Kapunda, South Australia.
James married Elizabeth Trewartha on 5 November 1859 at the residence of Elisha Trewartha (her father) at Kapunda, South Australia. Both James and Elizabeth were recorded as 22 years old.[5]
By 1877 James Renfrey Hawke and his wife had moved to Launceston, Tasmania, and it appears that he wanted to leave to leave the colony and his family. Elizabeth took him to court and they came to an "amicable arrangement". The case of Elizabeth Hawke v. James R. Hawke was reported in the Launceston Examiner on 18 October 1877.[6]
James Renfrey Hawke of Sandhill, Launceston wrote a letter about mining to the editor of The Tasmanian (Launceston, Tas. : 1881 - 1895) on 30 April 1881.[7]
He was living in Launceston according to his son Richard's marriage notice in the Kapunda Herald (SA : 1878 - 1951), on Tuesday 20 October 1885:
"MARRIED.
HAWKE—BETTERMAN.—On the 13th October, at the Bible Christian Manse, by the Rev. F. W. Bullock, Richard, eldest son of James R. Hawke, of Launceston, Tasmania, to Matilda, second daughter of the late Henry Betterman, of Kapunda. No cake ; no cards."[8]
There is a Death notice in Launceston Examiner on 14 June 1899 for James Hawke at Sandhill:
"DEATHS.
HAWKE.-On the 13th June, at the residence of his wife, Walter-street, Sandhill, James Hawke, aged 60 years, leaving a widow and two sons to mourn their loss."[9]
His funeral notice was in the Launceston Examiner on 15 June 1899:
"The funeral of the late Mr. James Hawke will leave the residence of his wife, Walter-street, Sandhill, on Friday at 3 o'clock. Friends are invited to attend.
James' great grandson, Bob Hawke, served as of Prime Minister of Australia in the 1980s and 1990s.
Research Notes
The Find a Grave page at Kapunda (Find A Grave: Memorial #167315505) says that he died on 10 August 1906, at his residence on Clare Road, Kapunda, but this was the death date of his widow and the page does not have a headstone photo. As far as I can tell, ( Davis-42955 14:22, 7 July 2023 (UTC) ) this is a phantom entry. The double plot R34abc with no headstone seems to contain at least:
Elizabeth Hawke (nee Trewartha) died 1906 age 68
Mary Louisa Hawke, 1868-1869 age 2 months (Elizabeth's daughter)
Mary Louisa Hawke, 1870-1901 age 31 (Elizabeth's daughter)
The Launceston death notice mentions only two sons.

Looks like these citations were made in error sometime in the past. Good pick up. There is no primary or good secondary source for date or location of death now.
Hawke-987 and Hawke-518 appear to represent the same person because: Appear to be the same person (even though there are different dates of death) .. but they are married to the same person (Trewartha-15).
