Richard Hawke married Elivina Matilda Bettermann (b. 1863) of Logans Gap, South Australia, on 13 October 1885 at the Bible Christian Manse in Kapunda, South Australia. He was 24, son of James Renfrie Hawke, she was 22, daughter of Henry Bettermann.[2]

HAWKE—BETTERMAN.—On the 13th October, at the Bible Christian Manse, by the Rev. F. W. Bullock, Richard, eldest son of James R. Hawke, of Launceston, Tasmania, to Matilda, second daughter of the late Henry Betterman, of Kapunda. No cake ; no cards.
He was Mayor of Kapunda from 1924-27. He is mentioned as the ex-Mayor of Kapunda in the 1930 obituary of his brother, James,.[4] Blanche d'Alpuget's biography of Bob Hawke mentions him: "An uncle (of Bob's father) Clem, Dick Hawke, was a Labor candidate agin Kapunda, 'but couldn't win against the farmers'".[5]

Mr. Richard Hawke, 78, who died at Kapunda after a short illness, was one of the town's oldest residents. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. james Hawke, and was born at Ross Creek, near Kapunda. He went to school in the old Bible Christian Church. The school was kept by Mr. John Williams, and Mr.-Hawke was the third student of that school to become Mayor of Kapunda. He worked for the late Mr. Joseph Tuckfield, butcher, and in Mr. Frith's boot shop. Owing to ill-health he left the bootmaking trade, and went to Terowie, where he worked on the farm of Mr. Glasson. From there he went to Baldina. Returning to Kapunda he was employed by the Corporation, and did some contracting, later tributing on the Kapunda copper mine. In 1895. Mr. Hawke went to Western Australia, and was employed on the Starlight mine at Kalgoorlie. After 12 months he returned to Kapunda. and went to work in the Menzies Barossa gold mine, .staying there until the mine ceased operations. When the railway lie to Morgan was being relaid, he was employed on that work, and later on similar work on the north line from Gawler to Manoora. At this time Mr. Hawke contested Wooroora against Sir Frederick Young, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Mr. Paech. but was unsuccessful, and returned to his work on the railways. On leaving the railways he returned to Kapunda, and after being employed by the Waterworks Department for two years, retired. Mr. Hawke took an active interest in public affairs. He served in the town council for more than 25 years, and was the representative for North ward at the time of his death. In 1924 he was elected unopposed as mayor and held that office for three years. He was actively associated with Salem Tent No. 81. of the I.O. of Rechabites, which he joined in 1885, and was presented with a gold emblem of the Order in recognition of his services. He was a member of the Technical School council, and a member of the local bowling club. He gave valuable assistance at the annual shows of the agricultural and horticultural societies. In 1885 Mr. Hawke married Miss Betterman. a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Betterman, who survives, with two sons and one daughter — Mrs. J. Holland (Northfield), Messrs. Edgar Hawke (Adelaide) and Gordon Hawke (Kapunda).
