Biography

Catherine McManus nee Dolan was born in Scotland on May 22 c1889 and died in Thunder Bay in Sept 1983. She and her husband James McManus married in Scotland, and had 4 children. One of the children, Martha, died in a fire. The family emigrated to Canada about 1920 with their three remaining children. Elizabeth (Betty Blake) was the first born in Canada in Russell, Manitoba. James and Catherine went on to have another 3 Canadian born children .[1]

Catherine had at least three brothers and sisters: Anne, Patrick and Enos. Anne emigrated to Akron, Ohio but it was unknown whether the others came to North America or not. One brother (Harry) died in World War I. Before her marriage, Catherine worked as a domestic for a farmer and for a doctor. One of the places she worked was Shettleston. [2] Note: Kate's brother Harry was a Prisoner of War (Albania) and was missing, presumed dead. A Mass Card for him was found amongst his sister's possessions.

Nickname Kate confirmed; Kate was the third child in her family. Kate was in 'service' when her family left for America after her mother died. Her brother and sister, Patrick and Mary, were already married, so did not go with the family at that time.[3]

Born: 1890: Birth certificate: Catherine Dolan, born 22nd May 1890 at 3 hours, 0 minutes of the a.m; at 10 Graham Street, Tollcross; to John Dolan, coal miner and Martha Dolan nee Canning, who were married on 3rd June 1879 at Shettleston. Birth registered May 23, 1890 at Shettleston, Lanark, Scotland by child's father; John Stodart, Registrar.[4]

Marriage: 29 Apr 1912: St. Marie's Chapel, Kirkcaldy, County of Fife, Scotland. [5] 1912: Catherine is listed as a a spinster & a domestic servant on her marriage certificate. She was 22 years of age and she was living at 233 St. Claire Street, Kirkcaldy at the time of her marriage. Her parents were John Dolan (coal miner) & Mary Cannon (sic), deceased.[6] NOTE: At the time of Kate and James' marriage, St Marie Chapel was located at 56 Dunnikier Road, Kirkaldy. The parish relocated to a new location in a former church in 1975. The original chapel still exists, but has been converted to a private home.

Immigration: 1920: : Age 30, took ship SS Cassandra from Glasgow on 27 Aug 1920 with her husband James McManus and their children John, Catherine and James, and arrived in Quebec on 5 Sep 1920. Catherine was married. Her intended occupation in Canada was farm work. Her birthplace was Colton, Glasgow (see note below) and she was of British descent with a British passport. She was a Catholic and was coming to Canada with the intent to settle and live permanently in Canada.She had never lived in Canada, but her destination was her in-laws, John McManus, Box 96 Russell, Maniotba and she had a CPR train ticket. She was able to read and write and spoke English. She had $25.00 in her possession and her passage had been paid for by the government. Her nearest relative to her point of origin was her father, Mr. John Dolan, 254 Main, St., Shettleston, Glasgow. She had never been in an insane asylum or had tuberculosis, and had no physical defects. She was 5 foot 2 inches tall, of fresh complexion, had auburn hair and grey eyes. [7]

1920: arrived in Canada Sept. 8, 1920. (arrived Russell??) [8]

Died: 10 Sep 1983; Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. Catherine Mary McManus was living at 338 East Francis Street, Thunder Bay at the time of her death, 10 September 1983. She was born 22 May 1890 in Glasgow, Scotland, and was 93 years of age at the time of her death. She was attended by Dr. M. Mymko. Her usual occupation was listed as 'homemaker' and she was a widow. Her late husband was James Anthony McManus. She was a Roman Catholic, her funeral was held at St. Elizabeth RC Church, Fort William (Thunder Bay), Rev JJ Muldoon officiating. She was buried 13 September 1983 at Mountainview Cemetery.[9]

Also living in the household: Peter Dolan (brother to John) 28 years of age, b c1863, Baillieston, Lanarkshire, coal miner.

1921 CENSUS: 62 Manitoba Ave, Russell, Manitoba. Head of household James McManus, male, married, 34 yrs, b Scotland c1887, father and mother both born in Scotland, labourer, immigrated with family in 1919. Wife Katherine 34 yrs of age; children: John 7, Katherine 4, James 2. All Roman Catholic.

1942, July: Moved to Fort William. Kate McManus lived on Christina St. on one side of the street and moved to the other side of the street when her daughter Catherine Kennedy and son-in-law Howard moved down from Winnipeg. They moved in with Kate until they got a house of their own. [13]

1944: Kate, her son Tom, and her daughters: Betty, Nellie and Anne, were all living on Christina Street at the time of her husband James McManus's death in 1944 [14]
