Biography

John was born in 1799. He was the son of John Burgin and Elizabeth, née Mann.

In 1860 John was listed in the Swannanoa Post Office area of Buncombe County, North Carolina. John was 60 years old and working as a farmer. He listed his real estate value at $8000 and his personal estate value at $31,500.^[5]

In 1870 John was listed in the household of his daughter at the age of 70 living in Swannanoa, Buncombe County, North Carolina. John was still listed as a farmer with a real estate value of $4000 and personal estate value at $500.^[6]

John was 80 years old when he was listed in the 1880 U.S. Census living with his daughter in Swannanoa, Buncombe County, North Carolina.^[7]

John died in 1884 and is buried at Piney Grove Cemetery in Swannanoa, Buncombe County, North Carolina.^[8]

John Burgin, born Dec. 7, 1799, 2nd child of Joh and Leah. He first married Elizabeth Lytle on October 21, 1821, in Burke County, N.C. John had 4 children by Elizabeth, but only one survived childhood. Elizabeth was born July 23, 1795, and died June 16, 1837. John then married Rachel Adaline Davidson on November 7, 1837, in Buncombe Co. Rachel was the daughter of Samuel W. Davidson.

In 1830, John was living in Burke County, but after his marriage to Rachel he evidently moved to Buncombe County, for he was living in the Swannanoa section of Buncombe county in the 1840 census. Rachel died November 11, 1849, and is buried at the Piney Grove Cemetery, at the Presbyterian Church outside of Swannanoa. John was listed as the head of the house in the 1850-60 census of Buncombe County. He did not remarry again. By 1870, John, now 70, moved in with his daughter, Leah Adaline and her husband A. B. Fortune. Leah later died and A. B. remarried, but John remained in the household until his death, June 21, 1884. He is buried in Piney Grove Cemetery, in Swannanoa.^[9]
