Biography

[Dr.] Edward Bulkeley, D.D., second son of Thomas Bulkeley, Esq., of Buntingsdale, Shropshire, and Elizabeth Grosvenor, was born about 1540.[1][2]

Education and Career

Edward matriculated pensioner from St. John's College, Cambridge in 1555, proceeded to B.A. 1559/60, Fellow 1560, and B.D. in 1569.[1][3] He was ordained on 25 March 1564 at Lincoln.[4] He attained a D.D. in 1578.[1][3]
Edward was a moderate Puritan[5] and non-conformist, a learned divine, an able preacher, and an author, well connected and possessed of considerable wealth. The supplement to the edition of Foxe's Acts and Monuments of the Martyrs of 1610 was written by him.[6]
Edward was presented as Rector of Odell, Bedfordshire, about 1571 and he became a prebendary of Chester Cathedral in 1574, Westminster in 1583, and Lichfield in 1594.[1] He was Vicar of St. Mary, Shrewsbury, 1578-1582.[1][2]
He resigned as Rector of Odell in 1609, and was succeeded by his son, Rev. Peter Bulkeley, who was Rector there from 1610-1635.[1][2] Rev. Peter Bulkeley, emigrated to America and settled in Concord, Massachusetts.[1]

Legatee and Executor

Edward was named the executor of the will of his son, Nathaniel, which was proved 4 December 1602.[5]
In his 15 August 1606 will, proved 27 Nov 1606, Richard Madockes of Woodhall, Bedfordshire, made bequests to "Mr. Doctor Bulkley, Mistress Olive Bulkley and their daughter Mistress Elizabeth Bulkley" and named Edward as the executor of his will.[5] Edward was also named in the will of his son-in-law, Richard Whittingham (husband of his daughter, Elizabeth), dated 6 March 1615 and proved 18 April 1618.[5]

Marriage and Children

The profile mentions a birth in Bellport, Shropshire. There is no Bellport in Shropshire according to Google. It seems far more likely that Edward was born at Buntingsdale in Shropshire where his father and mother lived and his siblings are associated.

It may help understand Edward's origins better to include the pedigree of the Barker and Bulkeley families that is shown in his father Thomas's profile. Dr George Acworth (Acworth-317) was at Cambridge at the same time as Edward and was a leading Protestant theologian, student of Archbishop Mathew Parker who served Ann Boleyne and at the request of Ann, looked after the religeous responsibilities of her daughter - the future Queen Elizabeth. Both Edward Bulkeley and George Acworth are of the same generation and occur in this pedigree.

Thanks, Ian. The place must have been a straightforward slip, and I have corrected it.

By the way, the pedigree you refer to is already on this profile, as a profile image.

Bellport was a straight up error ... thank you for catching it Ian and thank you for correcting it Michael!

I added a link to the Barker and Bulkeley pedigree in MGH under the sources heading and removed the image as it is now redundant.

Would you care to add an unlinked daughter, Mary, Bulkeley-539 as one of his daughters please?. She's listed in the bio as one of his children and it will get her off the Bedfordshire unlinked list. Thanks David
