Biography

William de Brewes (or Breuse, Breus, Breouse), Knt., 2nd Lord Brewes, was born about 1261 (aged 46 in 1307).[1][2] He was the son and heir of William Braose, Knt., 1st Lord Brewes, and his first wife, Aline de Multon.[1][3][2]

William's father sided with the king during the Second Barons War and young William was held hostage in 1264 by Simon de Montfort, under the care of his wife, Eleanor.[4]

William did homage and had livery of his fathers lands on 1 March 1290/1. He was summoned to Parliament by writs dated 29 December 1299 to 18 September 1322 directed to Willelmo de Brewosa. He also took part in the Baron's letter to the Pope dated 12 February 1300/1.[3]

William married first to Agnes ______.[1][2] The date and place of marriage are unknown and are estimated. They had two daughters:

  • Aline, married first to John Mowbray, Knt., 2nd Lord Mowbray, and second to Richard de Peshale, Knt.[1][3]
  • Joan, died before 23 June 1324, married first to James de Bohun and second to Richard Foliot[1][3]

William married second, before 24 April 1317, to Elizabeth de Sully, daughter and heiress of Sir Raymond de Sully.[1][3][2] They had no known children.

William had "alienated his lordships of Bramber and Gower to his son-in-law, John de Mowbray",[3] but had previously contracted to sell them to others, including Humphrey de Bohun, Hugh Despenser and Roger Mortimer.[1] In 1320, when Mowbray claimed the property, the king confiscated it and gave it to Despenser[1] because William had transferred the property without permission of the king. It is thought that this property transfer and subsequent confiscation precipitated the civil war between King Edward II and the Barons in 1321/2.[1]

William died before 1 May 1326; his widow, Elizabeth, died before 24 August 1328.[1][3]

PMs do you have any source for Eleanor Bavant-3? She is not listed as a wife of William de Braose/Brewes by Richardson in Magna Carta Ancestry.

I'm also asking this of the PMs for Eleanor Bavant-3 - maybe one of them has a source?

Please reply whether you think she should be disconnected from William's profile or kept as his wife?

Also please see text and footnotes this profile on wife Elizabeth Sully. Richardson shows Agnes Unknown as the mother of William's two daughters, and no children with Elizabeth. Does anyone have other sources on William and Elizabeth?

PS - I checked Royal Ancestry by Douglas Richardson this morning, as it has publishing date of 2013, as opposed to 2011 for Magna Carta Ancestry, and has most of the same profiles (and many more). Richardson updates any new finds or changes from MCA in RA, but the profile for William de Braose still shows no children with Elizabeth Sully, and still does not show Elizabeth Bavant as a wife. So, need other sources or?
