Biography

James was born about 1758 in Slaithwaite, Yorkshire. There are several possible baptisms.

He married Rebecca Clay on 9 January 1777 at Huddersfield. Married by banns, both of that parish, both signed with a cross, witnesses George Wood and James Booth.[1] After the marriage they lived at Rebecca's home place of Thorps, Slaithwaite, and children of James baptised from there are John, Joseph, James, William, Betty, Richard, and Hannah. They appear to have moved to Bank Nook, a small hamlet near Slaithwaite, about 1790, and it is given as the abode on the register entries of Isaac, a second James, Mary, Alice, and Abraham, plus the burials of John and the second James (the first had died at Thorps). The older children were baptised at St James, Slaithwaite, but the two youngest children were entered on the register at Pole Moor Baptist Chapel, still of Bank Nook.

Research Notes

There were at least two James Woods baptising children in Slaithwaite 1770 - 1800. James Wood of Leatherhouse, Lingards, Slaithwaite, had children there between 1773 (before the marriage of Rebecca Clay) and 1790. William Wood is an existing profile for a child of his. James of Leatherhouse died there in 1800.

This James is James Wood of Thorps, Slaithwaite, who had children from 1777 to 1788 at Thorps, and at Bank Nook 1791 - 1800. It is likely that the baptisms for Thorps and Bank Nook are the same family as three of the sons born at Thorps, Richard, Joseph, and William, were buried at Pole Moor Chapel, where their two youngest siblings of Bank Nook were baptised, and Richard and Joseph have records showing they lived at Bank Nook; Joseph lived there the rest of his life and died there in 1851.

Possible baptism 16 April 1759 at Slaithwaite: James son of John Wood of High House, Linthwaite.[2]

Possible burial at Highfield Independent Chapel, Huddersfield, 29 May 1823.[3]
