Biography

Mary was born in 1799 in Gillamoor, the daughter of Joseph Wood and Mary Fisher. The village of Gillamoor as well as the village of Fadmoor and market town of Kirkby Moorside (now spelled Kirkbymoorside) for centuries had a channeled water delivery system carrying spring water from the moors that lasted well beyond Mary's lifetime until the year 2000. This pastural area of Yorkshire contains many farms. Mary married farmer Richard Chapman from Kirkbymoorside, located three miles north of Gillamoor, around 1824. Although a marriage record hasn't been located yet a Family tree on Ancestry suggests 20 November 1824 was the date. It has been my experience that when the dates become specific there is usually a record to be found somewhere. Mary and Richard's first child, daughter Elizabeth Chapman, was baptized at Kirkby Moorside 28 Sept 1825. Although the record of this baptism and the birth records of their other three children do not contain Mary's maiden name, her death record lists her as born in 1799, her census records list her as born in the tiny village of Gillamoor and her name was Mary. The search will continue for the record with her maiden name but there is no real doubt it was Mary Wood, born in 1799 whose parents lived in Gillamoor and baptized her in Kirkbymoorside.

The farm of Richard and Mary Chapman was located in the Parish of Kirkbymoorside and known as High Park. During its many decades of operation, Richard employed men and teenage boys to help plough the fields and shepherd the sheep. Mary helped as well as she was listed as a farmer's wife under occupation in two census records. Mary passed away in late 1877 at age 78, most likely in the family home at High Park. Her husband Richard died there in 1880. Today High Park farm is a Bed & Breakfast. Their advertisement mentions "360 degree views of the Vale of Pickering and the Howardian Hills to the south and north to the Moors."
