Mary was born about 1761, the daughter of Charles Fisher and Elizabeth Oliver. Her father was a "husbandman", a specialist in a branch of farming. She had two younger brothers, James and Robert. Mary married Joseph Wood in 1780 and they had eight children, with six surviving to adulthood. Mary passed away in 1837 and was buried with her husband in the St. Aidan's Churchyard at Gillamoor.
