Joseph was born in 1754 to parents Robert Wood and Tamer Potter. He married Mary Fisher in Great Edstone, located about 2 miles from Kirkby Moorside. The couple lived in Gillamoor, a few miles north of Kirkby Moorside and raised their family of eight children there. Both Joseph and his wife Mary were buried in the graveyard of St. Aidan's Church. A church has stood on the site since the 12th century but the current one was rebuilt by one man, James Smith of Farndale, in 1802. It's a pretty location. The church wall has a plaque that reads: "Thou, who hast given me eyes to see and love this sight so fair, give me a heart to find out thee and read thee everywhere."
