Burwell Williams was in Northampton County, NC, prior to moving to Chatham County. He is on an undated militia list that is believed to be from 1757[2]. He was also a witness to a deed in 1760, along with Chaplan and Asa Williams[3].
Burwell Williams was a wealthy merchant who owned a store in Chatham County, NC. It was located at the head of navigation on the Cape Fear River, near present day Moncure, NC. He served as Lt. in Cpt. Elisha Cain's Company of the Chatham County Militia in 1772. In 1847 his daughter, Martha Snipes gave an affidavit that her father was present at the Battle of Cane Creek aka Lindley's Mill on September 13th, 1781. Burwell owned 1,073 acres of land in Chatham County, NC at the time he wrote his will. He lived on the east side of the Cape Fear River and owned land on Shaddocks Creek which would place his land NW of present day Corinth, NC. He had 9 children listed in his will. Those being Thomas, Charity Buchannon (ancestor of Pat Buchanan), Sarah Ragland, Martha Snipes, Mary Buttrill, Elizabeth Cross, Fanny Utley, Nancy Springfield, and Temperance Hinton.
