Communication Preferences: I am interested in communicating private message with anyone who shares the same genealogical or historical interests. Here is my family tree.
I have ancestry from quite a few places--England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Netherlands, France, with deeper Spanish, Scandinavian, and Mediterranean. The large majority of my emigrant ancestors were in Colonial Virginia, but also in New Netherland, early Massachusetts (but not quite qualifying for the Mayflower) ; Huguenots in New Netherland, Manakintown in Virginia, & in North & South Carolina. My more recent ancestry comes from Florida, Georgia, Missouri, Virginia, & western New York. I have quite a few brick walls that I need to dig under, climb over, or go around! I have about 50 years of general genealogical experience, and about 20 years of online & lineage society experience, which includes SAR, Colonial Wars, Huguenot Society of Georgia, Holland Society of New York, & more.

Descendant

I have been working on my family tree for over 50 years, since I was about 10. My paternal grandmother's younger sister wrote a chapter on the Carmichael family of Henry County, Georgia, which was published in the book First Families of Henry County, Georgia. She got me started, and I've been hooked ever since! Over the years I have been a member of about a dozen lineage societies, which cover everything from the Revolutionary War, to the War of 1812, to the Colonial Wars, to Jamestowne, the Huguenots, and the Holland Society of New York. I've also been a longtime member of the Carmichael and Elliot clans. my main project is the Oosterhout surname study right now. [1]

Hi Geoff, It looks like you used the challenge tracker during the Connect-A-Thon and marked them for the USBH Connecting Challenge. No one needs to use the tracker during the thon since profiles are counted automatically. The USBH challenge is for the US Black Heritage Project. Thanks, Emma
Hi,

Thanks so much for being a part of the Mid-Atlantic team for the January Connect-a-thon! Working together we added 2,334 profiles. A special shout out to Star Kline who was our number one scorer.

Please check your suggestions list (it is on the My Wikitree drop down menu) before orphaning any profiles.

Two of our team members have have been nominated to be RAWKed in February, Stephen Tomaszewicz and Dave Stern. It would be wonderful if they both got picked. If you love connecting, you can sign up to help RAWK 5 members of Wikitree in February here: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1682875/want-help-fellow-wikitreer-increase-their-february-will-event

Sorry about not answering you earlier. I've been offline off and on the last couple of weeks. As far as the Wales project goes, I would love to take part but your requirement for adding something every six months might be a problem for me. I've been working on my tree for over 50 years, and have only had a few breakthroughs in the last 5 years or so, and nothing in my Welsh lines. I know that I need to start digging very deeply into what is now available online, but I'm not sure how much help I would be to the project itself.

I see that you have inferred that your Catharina Hofman, who married Marthynus Oosterhout, was from a "Palatine" family. That's possible, but there were some Hofmans in Ulster County well before the first Palatine migrants arrived. See Zacharias Hofman (abt.1675-aft.1744) and Nicholas Hofman (abt.1680-). I think that the son of Nicholas Hofman is a likely candidate to be the Marthynus Hofman who witnessed the baptism of your Marthynus Oosterhout.

It can be a challenge to distinguish between New Netherlanders and Palatines, particularly if Germans went to Dutch churches or Dutch went to German churches. Some of my supposed Hudson Valley "Dutch" ancestors (in received family trees) have turned out to be Palatines. There are others who were English soldiers, and still others who were French -- mostly Huguenots. And I have some distant cousins who are convinced that some of the ancestors who I believe were German Palatines were actually French.

The more I look at Zacharias Hofman, the more he seems like the right family. Marthynus Oosterhout and Catharina Hofman had a second son, Ary, who was christened at the KRDC. The sponsors for the christening are listed as Hendrik Smit and Grietjen Hofman, which sounds an awful lot like Zacharias' daughter Margaret, and it makes perfect sense for Catherine to have her sister as a sponsor. I've looked at all the Hendrik Smit to find some kind of link with Grietje without any luck, including families in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Were sponsors at a christening always a married couple? I'm not sure how to approve this because it sounds like Catharina's christening record may fall into those records that are lost from the New Paltz church. Any thoughts? by the way, we are 9C1R through Willem Vredenburgh.

Welcome to WikiTree and DNA.

When you are ready to supplement your part of our one big tree with DNA matches, please check out the DNA Help category page to see all the help that is available for the various types of DNA tests, and the How to Get Started page in particular.

When you are ready to start confirming that your DNA matches correspond with your genealogy sources, be sure to follow the guidance at the DNA Confirmation help page. After that, try out the DNA Confirmation Citation Maker, it can simplify the job.

Hi Geoff! Great to see someone with Fitz Randolph roots! I have added in Fitz Randolph genealogy sources for your Elias F Randolph, plus added profiles for this father that now connect your tree back to Edward. You are welcome to take over Thomas Fitz Randolph's profile (I always enjoy making a profile for my namesake!) so that you can continue to strengthen and fill out that branch -- helping to confirm the Fitz Randolph genealogy info!

Hi Geoff,

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles!

It’s very important to read and understand the Help:Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines laid out on that page.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

Hi,

Welcome back. We are so happy you decided to sign the Honor Code.

Please visit our tutorial pages to learn how to use WikiTree: How To Use WikiTree. They will save you time, energy, and frustration as you add your family profiles.

Exploring the site is the best way to learn. One way to do that is to check out the drop-down menus on the top right side of your profile page. Finding a known ancestor and collaborating with the profile manager is another great way to start.

Questions? You can always use the G2G link in the Help Menu to find answers.

Hi G,

Welcome to the WikiTree family!

WikiTree is different because our goal is to have one profile per person, which means that members work together as a single collaborative team. The Honor Code is our guide to keep everything functioning smoothly as we work on one BIG tree.

The initial email from us has links you can use to get started. When you confirm your email address, you'll have an option to volunteer to add information to WikiTree, beginning with tags for your own profile. Tags are how we keep up with new information on surnames, locations, concepts, etc.

If you volunteer, a greeter will confirm your membership, and you'll be able to add new profiles!

Carole

P.S. I'm always happy to answer questions.
