Biography

Mary was born in 1842. It is unclear if her mother Nancy was born a Williams and/or was widowed by a Mr. Williams.

Trees citing Mary's middle name as Frances have no basis in records unless you can find it and cite it.

In 1830 Marion County, Tennessee, are found men with the Williams surname: William Williams aged 70-79 was in 1830 Marion County Tennessee with presumed wife aged 70-79; m000010001:f00011001 no slaves. [1] This enumeration is on line nine over the tenth entry Mathias Williams, code m200001:f100001.

Among the 1840 Williamses in Marion County, Tennessee is a Judath Williams, clearly a female [2] with an all-female household 1000010001 for one female under 5, one female 30 to 39, and one female 70 to 80. The Mary at this profile was presumably not yet born.

The connection appears in 1850: The Agricultural census has Judah Williams [3] with 22 improved and 30 unimproved acres.

Nancy Williams, 42, born Tennessee, is found in the household of a female Judah Williams, 88, born Virginia, in the 1850 Marion County Tennessee census, along with Rebecy Williams 14, and Polly Williams 8. [4] There seems little reason to doubt that the Judath in 1840 is the same woman Judah in 1850; that the youngest female in 1840 is Rebecca, and the middle female must be Nancy. The birth of a child between 1840 and 1850 is implied, with no marriage yet found for Nancy. Is there any doubt that Polly is the Mary at this profile?

Judath does not appear again, not surprising if she was 88 in 1850. She is likely Judith (Sanders) Williams.

Mary Williams,17, is enumerated with Nancy Williams, 55, in 1860. [5]

Mary married Wade Hampton Slatton, Jr. in 1867. [6]

Issue in evidence are: Nancy J., Sarah Delia, William S (Sam'l?), John Franklin, Sampson David, James Green, Mary Francis, Charlotte Florence, Thomas Arthur, and Minnie Belle Slatton.

Mary passed away in 1916 and is buried in Red Hill Cemetery, Whitwell, Marion, Tennessee. [7]

Mary's Probate: Her estate is listed on Page 14 of the Marion co TN inventories, 1908-1968, Vol 2. [8] It mentions "1 Bible," presumably the one misidentified by Mr. Douthat in his Sequatchie Valley Bible Records.[9]

Documentary clue from informant: did he know?

Mary Slatton's death cert, informant, J. F. Slatton, almost certainly her son John Franklin Slatton, gives her birthplace as Marion County, Tennessee, highly likely, but her parents as "John Slatton [born] Virginia" and "Nancy Williams [born] Virginia," [10] highly unlikely because 1) Nancy Williams appears to have no marriage of record. and 2) no such marriage for any John Slatton is recorded, unless you can find it and cite it.

There is, however, a man who is not (yet) firmly connected to progenitors or descendants. He might be of a likely age to father a child by Nancy, according to records: John Slayton found in 1810 Grainger County, Tennessee tax records (all but one county of the census for Tennessee in 1810 was mostly destroyed). [11]. That he might be this reported father is only reported here as possible, but his continuance in later records is unclear.

Research Notes

If Judah Williams was clearly a male aged 58 in 1850, the standard assumption would be that he is the husband of Nancy Williams, that she bore him at least two daughters, and that he died before 1860. But there is no male Judah in this picture, and this female Judah/Judath is more likely aged 88 in 1850.

Probate records could lead to a more solid framework.

But why Nancy Williams would bear children named WIlliams is another matter. Perhaps she married a Williams, or never married at all.
