Biography

Nancy was born in 1805 or 1806. She was the daughter of William Williams and Judith Sanders.

No marriage record is yet found for her, please cite if found, but not with an uncited family tree. Census evidence suggests that she might have had two daughters, Rebecca and Mary "Polly" WIlliams.

She passed away in 1883 and is buried in Red Hill Cemetery, Whitwell, Marion, Tennessee. [1]

Research Notes

excerpted book

A book by Linda Stufflebean. The Williams family of Cumberland County, Virginia and their westward migration: being the history of the descendants of Roger Williams and brothers, Thomas and Matthias Williams from 1720 to 1865, states on page 95 that this family "probably" settled in Marion County. [2] On page 99, it reads:

William (Matthias) was born c1760-65, probably in Cumberland Co., VA; died between 1830 [-] 40, probably in Marion Co., TN; married Judith Saunders before 12 Nov 1788, Cumberland Co. [Virginia]. Their marriage bond is only dated by the name of the governor, fixing the date as noted above. Judith was born c1765, VA, but her parents have not been identified. Judith survived him and was living in Marion Co. in 1850 with her daughter, Nancy [3]. She apparently died before 1870. William bought land in Marion Co. in 1825. [4] Shiloh Church minutes in Roane Co. show that the petition of a William Williams for a letter of dismission on 26 Mar 1825 was granted [5] The church record probably refers to this William, as it coincides with his land purchase in Marion Co.

[excerpted for profile clues, comments in brackets not by Stufflebean]

ix. Nancy. born 17 Dec 1806. [gravestone shows 1805] TN: died after 1870. probably in Marion Co. TN: apparently unmarried but had at least one daughter, probably two. [6]

Documentary clue from informant: did he know?

Mary Slatton's death cert informant, J. F. Slatton, almost certainly her son John Franklin Slatton, gives her birthplace as Marion County, Tennessee, highly likely, but her father as "John Slatton [born] Virginia" and "Nancy Williams [born] Virginia," [7] highly unlikely because 1) Nancy Williams appears to have no marriage of record, and 2) no such marriage for any John Slatton is recorded, unless you can find it and cite it.

There is, however, a man who is not (yet) firmly connected to progenitors or descendants. He might be of a likely age to father a child by Nancy, according to records: John Slayton found in 1810 Grainger County, Tennessee tax records (all but one county of the census for Tennessee in 1810 was mostly destroyed). [8] That he might be this reported father is only reported here as possible, but his continuance in later records is unclear.
