His life before 1830 might have included time in Roane County, Tennessee, although this is unclear. Numerous marriage records for issue attributed to him in Research Notes appear in that county.
Note that an undated marriage bond to Mary Gannaway in Cumberland County Virginia was read by William Shepard, [1] as well as an undated one to Judith Saunders mentioned in Research Notes. [2]
William Williams aged 70-79 was in 1830 Marion County Tennessee with presumed wife aged 70-79; m000010001:f00011001 no slaves. [3] This enumeration is on line nine over the tenth entry Mathias Williams, code m200001:f100001.
The bond to Judith and the post-1830 records in Marion County, Tennessee for Judath suggest strongly that she is his widow, Judith Saunders/Sanders
Surveys in Marion County, Tennessee, supporting notes below include one (entry #111) in 1824 for 80 acres William Williams owns, crossing Crow Creek and adjoining Hillsman King, [4] and 1825 for 5 acres apparently sold by William Williams, [5]
A book by Linda Stufflebean. The Williams family of Cumberland County, Virginia and their westward migration: being the history of the descendants of Roger Williams and brothers, Thomas and Matthias Williams from 1720 to 1865, states on page 95 that this family "probably" settled in Marion County. [6] On page 99, it reads:
William (Matthias) was born c1760-65, probably in Cumberland Co., VA; died between 1830 [-] 40, probably in Marion Co., TN; married Judith Saunders before 12 Nov 1788, Cumberland Co. [Virginia]. Their marriage bond is only dated by the name of the governor, fixing the date as noted above. Judith was born c1765, VA, but her parents have not been identified. Judith survived him and was living in Marion Co. in 1850 with her daughter, Nancy. [7] She apparently died before 1870. William bought land in Marion Co. in 1825. [8] Shiloh Church minutes in Roane Co. show that the petition of a William Williams for a letter of dismission on 26 Mar 1825 was granted [9] The church record probably refers to this William, as it coincides with his land purchase in Marion Co.
