This profile is part of the Slaton Name Study.

Wade Hampton Slatton was born about 1846 or 1847 in Tennessee, probably in Bradley or Polk County. By 1850 the Slattons had moved across the Georgia state line to Dade County, where his father farmed on $250 worth of land. [1]

His father Hampton Sr. married Elizabeth Sisum in DeKalb County, Alabama in January 1853, suggesting that Hampton Jr.'s mother Charlotte, had died or separated, probably the former. [2] The Slattons were in DeKalb County in 1860, when Hampton was attending school with his like-aged step-brother George Sissum. [3]

Wade Hampton initially enlisted in the 1st Alabama and Tennessee Independent Vidette Cavalry, in Whiteside, Marion, Tennessee in 24 April, 1864, reporting age of 17 (1847) [4] Two brothers George Wiley and John were in the same unit. When this unit was mustered out 16 June 1864, he and his brother George Wiley enlisted in the 12th Regiment of Tennessee Cavalry on 22 Sept 1864 in Nashville Tennessee. Wade Hampton reported 18 years old (~1846), stood 5 feet 6 inches, with light complexion, blue eyes, light hair, born in Dade County, Georgia. It is assumed that he did not remember his birth in Tennessee, as was reported while he was in his parent's household, but remembered his boyhood in Dade.

Units of the 12th were posted to St. Louis, Missouri, and on June 12, 1865, to Fort Leavenworth in Kansas. Wade Hampton Slatton was on detached service in Louisville, Kentucky in Feb 1865, almost certainly passed through St. Louis, Missouri with the this unit, and he and brother George were charged with desertion from Fort Riley in Manhattan Kansas, 23 June 1865. [5] The family story is that he and his brother did not wish to be so far from home and family, and they would more likely be fighting Indians than rebels in Kansas. A letter in correspondence for his pension was seen at the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Bicentennial Library in Tennessee. This is not yet found online, but it is supported by three filed cards cited below. A swooping "p" hand-written within Hampton's name confused clerks, who issued a gravestone for "Hamilton" Slaton instead of Hampton Slatton. [6]

This misreading is reflected in the images of multiple cards at the Pension Office:
One dated 22 June 1892, shows "Hamilton Slatton, decd." [7]

One dated 8 Feb 1893, shows "Hamilton Slatton." [8]

Yet another dated 8 Feb 1893, shows "Wade H Slatton." [9] confirming the request for removal of "desertion" from his record.

His pension and his widow's application were granted [10] [11] referring to both Alabama Cavalry and Co G, 12th Regt, Tenn Cavalry. Both filed as Claim 375,864.

He married Mary Williams on April 11th, 1867, [citation needed] and in 1870 the couple were living with Mary's presumably widowed mother Nancy in Marion County, Tennessee. [12] [13]

Hampton died on January 31st, 1888, according to the bible shown in Research Notes shown below, and was buried in Red Hill Cemetery in Whitwell, Marion, Tennessee, under the names Hamilton Slaton, [14] but the stone is now almost completely effaced. Presumably, his widow and family accepted the government-issued gravestone as written, [6] despite the inaccuracy, because the widow was granted a pension under that name.

Research Notes

  • Gravestone - Posted at memorial websites as it shows, reflecting what is on the marker. [14] But he was never known as "Hamilton Slaton." A swooping "p" hand-written within Hampton's name confused clerks, who filed pension index cards and headstone for "Hamilton" Slaton or Slatton instead of Hampton Slatton, as cited above.
  • Birthdate - Hampton is listed as 4 and 13 years old in the 1850 and 1860 Censuses, respectively, suggesting a birth year about 1846.
  • Surname - Records for this family appear as Slatton, Slatten, Slaton and Slaten.
