Harrison Slatton was a Tennessean.
This profile is part of the Slaton Name Study.

William Henry Harrison Slatton was born about 1840 to Wade Hampton Slatton and Charlotta. There is evidence that before Harrison's birth, his parents were in Campbell County, Tennessee, seen at John Slatton. The Slattons lived in Polk County, Tennessee during the early 1840s (which is likely where Harrison was born). [1] They were possibly in the same location in Bradley County [2] before the formation of Polk. Harrison would have been an infant when the 1842 school census was returned showing some (unnamed) children of Hampton Slatton. [3] Hampton and family moved to Dade County, Georgia by 1850. [4]

Harrison's mother Charlotte likely died before 1853, when his father married Elizabeth Sissum (surname likely from previous marriage) in DeKalb County, Alabama. Her surname is subject to a variety of spellings in records. [5] Note that a second family of half-siblings resulted from that marriage.

By 1860 Harrison and his parents were living in separate households in DeKalb County, Alabama, Harrison with the James Brown family. [6] He married Anna Helen Kizziah "Kizzie" Brown (James Brown's daughter) on August 31st of that year, and John Slatton (presumably his brother) served as the surety. [7]

Harrison and Kizzie gave birth to twin boys, William Delmarine (aka "Johns'on)" and Joseph Almerine (aka "Beauregard"), in June 1861, two months after the start of the Civil War. [8] [9] Harrison served as a private in Company D of Wheeler's Scouts, serving under Edwin Hawkins. These were "irregulars" who could be treated as spies or deserters if captured, because they observed and reported in civilian clothes, seldom riding or marching as a unit. A family story is that he was at home in DeKalb County for the impending birth of daughter Margaret Ann . He was captured ten days before her birth, on March 19th, 1864 and imprisoned at Camp Chase in Columbus, Ohio by April 2nd. He died of pneumonia on May 11th before he could fulfill his pledge to take the oath of allegiance. He is buried at grave #153 in Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery. [10] [11] [12]

Kizzie subsequently married Major Perel? Clark (his given names are somewhat unclear), with whom she produced another family and reared with her younger Slatton children. [13]

Research Notes

  • Civil War family split - His brother Hiram also elected to serve in the Confederate army as a "scout" while three other brothers, John, Wade Hampton and George Wiley, served in the Union army as videttes, essentially the same function as scouts. Each brother's descendants appear in records variously as Slatton, Slatten, Slaten and some branches from the two sons of Harrison use Slayton. His half-siblings were too young to serve.
  • Surname - frequently seen as Slatten. Some branches of his two son's families use Slayton, those of his siblings also use Slatton, Slaten and Slaton. Cousins and brothers are found with their families under non-matching surnames.
  • Birthdate and place - Harrison was enumerated as 10 years old in the 1850 Census, suggesting a date of birth between 1839 and 1840. The 1860 Census, however, lists his age as 18, suggesting a birth year between 1841 and 1842. His father was paying taxes in Bradley County, Tennessee, almost certainly in what became Polk County.
