Biography of Dr Robert White

Robert White was born 24 March 1688 at Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland; he was christened 25 March 1688 at Abby Paisley, Renfrewm, Scotland.[1] He was the son of John White, Apothecarie (Physician) of Paisley, Scotland and Jean (Johnstoun) White.. White was of Scottish and English origins, descending from Covenanters, a Scottish Presbyterian movement of the 17th century.[2]

Robert White was educated at the University of Edinburg, Edinburg, Scotland. Before coming to America, he was a surgeon with the rank of Captain in the British Royal Navy.[3]

In 1720, he arrived in Virginia and visited his uncle, William Hoge,[4] That same year, he married Margaret Hoge at Delaware.[3] She was the daughter of his uncle William Hoge Sr and Barbara (Hume) Hoge[5]

Robert, Margaret, and her father, William Hoge, moved from Delaware to the area of York, Pennsylvania, where White erected a residence he named “White Hall” after his family’s ancestral home in Scotland.

Dr. Robert White was one of the first settlers near North Mountain, west of Winchester, Virginia, where he established White's Fort, which was used during the French and Indian War. Between 1732 and 1735, he moved from York to Hogue Creek, a stream along the Great North Mountain near Winchester, Orange County, Virginia (Frederick County after 1738) where he established a 375 acre plantation he also named “White Hall.” His father-in-law, William Hoge, settled three miles south of Winchester on Opequon Creek. White, Hoge, and other families established the Opequon Meeting House, the oldest Presbyterian congregation formed west of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Dr. White was one of two physicians practicing in Frederick County. The other was Daniel Hart (d. abt 1748). One of Dr. White’s more notable patients was Colonel Jame Wood, founder of Winchester, Virginia.

Robert and Margaret White had three prominent sons, Judge John White, Col. Robert White, and Alexander, who was a lawyer and a member of the Continental Congress, that adopted the Constitution of the United States. [6]

Robert White passed on 11 Feb 1752 at Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia, USA. He is buried at the Old Opequon Cemetery, Kernstown, Frederick County, Virginia, USA.[7]
