Biography

Alexis (Thériault) Thériot is the descendant of a Huguenot emigrant.

Alexis Thériault was born around 1726 in Acadie, possibly Cobequid.[1]

Alexis married Madelaine Robichaud, daughter of Jean Robichaud and Marie Léger) around 1747 in Acadie.

Their children were:

  1. Madeleine Geneviève Thériault (about 1748–1825) .
  2. Pierre Alexis Thériault (about 1749–1814) .
  3. Louis Thériault (1751– ) .
  4. Joseph Thériot (about 1753–before 1827) .
  5. Rosalie Thériault (about 1755– ) .
  6. Marguerite Thériot (about 1755– )

Alexis decided to settle on Ile Saint-Jean (now Prince Edward Island) around 1750. He was found in Baddeck in 1752. The census of La Roque said of him: "resident laborer, native to Acadia, aged 26 and there is two years he is in the country, married with Magdeleine Robichaud, native to Acadia, aged 26. They have at this moment three children: Magdeleine Geneviève, 4 years old, Pierre Alexis, 3 years old, Louis, 17 months old.[2]

The family relocated many times during the Grand Dérangement. They managed to escape the second wave of deportations that took place on Ile Saint-Jean and Ile Royale in 1758 by fleeing to mainland Acadie. In 1760 the family of 7 was listed on a census taken in Restigouche. [3] Sometime in the early 1760s they either surrendered to or were captured by British forces and taken to Fort Edward as prisoners. [4] In 1763, they were prisoners in Halifax. [5]

After the treaty of 1763, the prisoners were released. The British authorities permitted Acadians to remain in the Colony of Nova Scotia as long as they took an unconditional oath of allegiance to the King of England. However the majority of the prisoners rejected their offer which would have obliged them to take arms against the French, and Natives, in case of conflict. Alexis likely decided to remain in mainland Acadie. Family members settled in Bouctouche, Pointe-de-l'Église and Barachois.

He died on Jul 26, 1799 in Bouctouche, Kent, Colony of New Brunswick, aged about 73.[6] [7] His grave was blessed on 22 November 1800 in Bouctouche.
