Biography

Madeleine-Geneviève Thériault, daughter of Alexis Theriot and Madeleine Robichaud, was born about 1748 in Acadia. She died July 1825 in Canada and was buried at Bouctouche, New Brunswick. Madeleine was 4 years old on the census of 1752 at Isle St. Jean, Acadie. Madeleine LeBlanc and Paul Gervais Girouard were married about 1766 at Halifax, Nova Scotia.[1] [2]

Her family was found in Baddeck on Isle Saint Jean in 1752. The census of La Rocque said of him: "resident laborer, native to Acadia, aged 26 and there is two he is in the country, married with Magdeleine Robichaud, native to Acadia, aged 26. They have at this moment three children: Magdeleine Geneviève, 4 years old, PIERRE ALEXIS, 3 years old, Louis, 17 months old.[3]

    Text: The first entry in the register kept by Charles François Bailly, missionary priest of the Indians and Acadian subjects of his Britannic majestry at Halifax. On 21 Jul 1768 he blessed the marriages of six couples: Paul Ger[vais] GIROERD & Magdeleine THERIAU were the fifth. Banns were dispensed for all, witnesses were Louis PETIT PAS, Alex[is] TERIAU [the bride's father], and several others.

    Alexis Terriaud, ploughman, nattive of l'Acadia, aged 26 years, he has been in the country two years. Married to Magdelaine Robichaud, native of l'Acadie, aged 26 years.
    They have three children, two sons and one daughter:-
    Pierre Alexis, aged 3 years.
    Louis, aged 17 months.
    Magdelaine Geneviève, aged 4 years.
    In live stock they have two oxen, two cows, one calf, one horse, and four pigs.
    The land on which they are settled is situated as in the preceding case, and was given to them by Monsieur de Bonnaventure, They have made no clearing having been constantly ill.

  • Maternal relationship is confirmed through Mitochondrial DNA test results on mitoYDNA.org. M. Castonguay, mitoYDNA kit # T16972, and half her 10th cousin, Rita (Cavanaugh) Carpenter, mitoYDNA kit # T17699, (compare kits), have an HVR1, HVR2, CR match with a minor mismatch in the Coding Region, thereby confirming their direct maternal lines back to their most-recent common ancestor who is Madeleine Brun, the 9x great grandmother of both M. Castonguay and Rita (Cavanaugh) Carpenter. DNA test taker M. Castonguay is the 5x great granddaughter of Madeleine Geneviève Thériault, the daughter of Madelaine Robichaud, the great granddaughter of the common ancestor Madeleine Brun.

WRT Marriage date: Registre de l'Abbé Charles-François Bailly shows "paul ger[vais] giroerd et magdeleine theriau" being married on July 21, 1768. No parents listed, but witnesses were "Louis petit pas, alex[is] teriau, et plusieurs autres temoins qui ne scavoient p[as] signer, dans la ville d'halifax"

I have a hard copy that was transcribed by Stephen A White's team at U of Moncton, so unfortunately can't provide a link.
