The ethnicity of my siblings and me, according to Ancestry.com as of February 2024, is:

  • 50% Irish (maternal: mostly Athenry Parish and east County Galway)
  • 40% French (paternal: Acadian mostly and Québecois; with some Huguenot and Gaspésie)
  • 7% Scottish (paternal Québecois side: McDonald, McIntyre and more)
  • 2% English (including a boy, a New Hampshire colonist, who was abducted by Abenaki, raised in Québec, and married into Québecois)
  • 1% Indigenous North America (Mi'kmaq most likely, in present-day Gaspé; and Abenaki, possibly Penobscot)

We also have a sprinkling of ancestry from single immigrants to Nouvelle-France in the late 1600's who were all assimilated as French-speaking Acadians or Québecois. Their ethnicities (and surnames) are:

  • Basque (Bastarache dit le Basque)
  • Irish (Caissie in French, Casey in English, Cathasaigh or Cathaiseach in Irish)
  • Polish (Loup dit Polonais)
  • Portuguese, from the Azores (Mirande dit Tavares)
  • Swiss (Staims)

Hi, Michael, I saw you follow the First Peoples Canada project because you might have some indigeneous ancestors. In the Acadia project we have a page to identify the known native people in our population. It might be of interest to you. I saw you have Petitpas in your tree and that family is well know for their native origins.

You and I are 8th cousins in two ways, through Claude Theriot and through Marie Gautrot. If you ever have questions or need help related to Acadians, please don't hesitate to contact me. I'd be glad to help.

Cindy Bourque Cooper, co-leader, Acadians Project.

Thank you, Cindy! The project list of indigenous people married to Acadians is very helpful.

You may want to add Unknown Mi'kmaq (bef.1695-) who was married to Unknown Baudot (bef.1695-). I am descended from them and their daughter Louise (Baudot) Lecouffe (abt.1720-1795) who married Aubin Louis Lecouffe (abt.1706-bef.1761), a French fisherman from Normandy.

Although they were Gaspésian rather than Acadian, many of their descendants married into Acadian families, including in my direct line: Richard, Savoie and Belliveau. Both Louise and her sister are confirmed indigenous from mtDNA testing revealing their D1 haplogroup, common to Amerindienne ancestry.

That may it for my Mi'kmaq connections. Some say the mother of Michel Haché (abt.1662-1737) may be indigenous, but that hasn't been confirmed. My Petitpas connection is through Marie, sister of Charles who married a Mi'kmaq woman, so no direct line to me.

So interesting! I appreciate your project leadership,

Mike

I'm glad to know about the Unknown Mi'kmaq, though as you point out, she was Gaspésian and not Acadian. We try not to overlap too much with Québec territory even though there are gray areas about the Gaspesie peninsula. I did check her descendants in the first 4 generations and there was maybe one that fit within the Acadian project (later years).

Best wishes, Cindy

Hi Michael,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Pre-1700 ancestors can be shared by many descendants, so collaboration is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

I’m going to suggest that the Canada project might fit your current research focus. If not, use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find other possibilities. Review the project page to learn about resources and guidelines as well as how to collaborate with the project members.

Please take your time. Accuracy is so much more important than speed on WikiTree. And please add locations, dates, and at least one reliable source to each profile, particularly any pre-1700s profile, before you leave it. (See: Pre-1700 Reliable Sources).

Have questions? Ask in the comments section of my profile.

 :)
