Biography

Paolo Streva is born 25 September 1870 and baptized two days later, named after his paternal grandfather. He is the son of Don Francesco Streva and Donna Giovanna Catalisano. His godfather is Don Antonino di Gregorio, represented by procurator Don Luigi Sferlazzo from Palermo.^[1]

At the time of Giovanni Vella's murder, Giuseppe Morello is in the Corleone mafia, and the mafia is run by a young man named Paolino Streva.^[2] Paolo is nineteen.

Paolo, age 23, possidente, marries Anna Giovanna Streva, his first cousin, once removed. Their marriage is published in the civil record on 22 December 1893. This record is unlike others, because instead of her father giving her away, there appears Angelo Streva, age 46, possidente, the guardian (tutore) of Anna Giovanna Streva, age 15, civile, who is the natural daughter of the late Paolo Streva and the living Antonina Frisella, possidente. The witnesses to their marriage are Filippo Bentivegna, 23, a student, and Giuseppe Battaglia, 46, a merchant.^[3] Battaglia is identified as the president of the Fratuzzi, the Mafia in Corleone, around 1890.^[4]

Paolo and Anna Giovanna marry in the Church on 11 January 1894. This record calls both bride and groom "legitimate and natural" children of their parents. Consanguinity is detected, and a dispensation received on 2 January 1894.^[5]

Paolo and Anna have at least six children: Giovanni (1899), two sons named Paolo (1905 and 1906), Francesca (c. 1903), Francesco Giovanni Paolo (c. 1905), and Antonino (1909).

Giovanni dies at age two years and four months (b. 1899) on 6 November 1901.^[6]

I estimate that Francesca is born around 1903, twenty years before she marries.

I estimate Francesco Giovanni Paolo is born around 1905, the same year as his wife.

The first son named Paolo, after his maternal grandfather, dies at three months of age on 5 July 1905.^[7]

The second son named Paolo is born 6 May 1906 and baptized on 4 June. His godparents are Benedetto Gambino and Liboria di Puma, a married couple.^[8]

Antonino is baptized 3 May 1909.^[9]

Francesca marries Ignacio Rizzo on 14 June 1923.^[10]

Francesco Paolo Giovanni marries Giuseppa Majuri on 13 February 1933.

A margin note on his baptismal record says Paolo married in Corleone, at the church of Santa Elena, on 29 May 1938, to Maria Giuseppa di Salvo, daughter of Leonardo.^[8]
