Giovanni Streva, agricoltore (gentleman farmer or grain farmer), is the son of Francesco Streva, possidente (landowner) and Donna Giovanna Catalisano, civile (a member of the borghese). He is born out of wedlock on 17 August 1866 in Corleone at his parents' home on via San Leonardo.[1] His parents marry a year later, in September 1867, thus legitimizing his birth.[2][3]
In December 1889, Giovanni Vella, a field guard standing for local office, is assassinated. Don Francesco Ortoleva, Vella's political rival, is tried for the murder. In court, Giovanni, a farm manager and brother to Mafia capo Paolo Streva, is one of three men that Ortoleva says killed Giovanni Vella, among other, unnamed associates. The other two men are the infamous mafioso, Giuseppe Morello and Michele Coniglio. Michele is described as an agricultural laborer.[4]
Giovanni flees to Brazil at some point afterwards. In February 1893, at the age of 26, he marries Dona Ana Clara Costa, a native of Pirai, Brazil, at the Fazenda da Boa Vista (Boa Vista Farm?) in the Sao Joao Marcos district of Rio De Janeiro, where they both reside. Dona Ana's parents are the late Tenente-Coronel (Lieutenant Colonel) Silvino Jose da Costa and the living Dona Maria Isabel Breves Costa.[5][6][7]
