William was born about 1425. He is the son of John Stoke.
William was one of the first scholars at the newly formed Eton college. His entry in the Eton register [1] of scholars says:
Stokes, Stokke or Stoke 1441-1445.
William; born at Warmington, county Northants; named scholar in the Founder's Charter of 11 Oct 1440; took the oath to obey the statutes as aged 16 on 21 Dec 1443; elected scholar of King's College Cambridge 25 Sep 1444 aged about 19 and admitted Oct 1445; fellow of King's 1447-8; served in the army; in 1451 member of a commission to examine soldier's complaints against Sir Thomas Hoo the King's commissary and chancellor in Normandy; in 1454 sergeant of the porter's transport in the royal household; granted a general pardon by Edward IV in 1469 when of Temple Newsam, county York; appointed by Henry VII keeper of Rockingham Park and justice of the peace for Northants 1486
A son of John and Agnes Stock was Sir William Stock, knight, of Warmington, who, in 1464, was attainted as an adherent of Henry VI, but procured pardon and restitution in 1472. He died in 1485, leaving as heir his brother Thomas Stokes, clerk.[2]
On the 21st September 1485, Henry VII granted to Sir William Stokke, knight, the office of "Keeper of the New Park at Rockingham for life" [3]
William Stokes, knight, died 3 Oct 1485 and an Inquisition was held 26 June 1 Henry VII. Thomas Stokes, clerk, aged 40 and more, was his brother and heir [4]
