Seaborn Smith was a Freemason.

Seaborn was born in 1826. He was the son of Jack Smith and Margaret Butler. He passed away in 1867. He married Delina W. Eastland in Hillsboro, Mississippi in 1849.^[1] He had four children: Selden Alred Smith, Mary Medora Smith, Sidney Johnson Smith and Hiram Eastland Smith.

He attended the founding meeting for the Southern States Rights Assocation for Scott County held 15 Mar 1851 in Scott County, Mississippi. At this meeting he made a speech about the wrongs and injustices done to the South and he was also appointed to a committee to draft a Constitution and By-Laws for the Assocation.^[2]

He served in Co. A 2nd Battalion Mississippi Troops from the fall of 1861 to the fall of 1863 under Captains Luke Lyle and Thomas Harris and Major Wes Harper. He was discharged in the fall of 1863 when he fell ill and was no longer able to serve. ^[3]

On the 1860 United States Census Slave Schedules he owned 2 slaves. A female 20 years of age and a male 6 years of age.^[4]

Notes

1. His place of birth is listed as Rankin County, Mississippi, as this is what appears on his grave marker, even though Rankin County was formed after he was born. He was most likely born in the area of Hinds County that later became Rankin County.
2. The only documentation located to date for his Civil War service is the pension application prepared by his widow. This document does not specify his rank during his service.
