My name is John Armstead Townes. I've been working on my family tree here on Wikipedia and on Family Search, and noticed your activities on the Townes branch specifiically William Townes I and II...The Townes tree gets a little confusing there (a lot of Williams and Johns) and I though we might share information or observations.
I know my direct Townes line from family information and my own research. There's me, my father Peyton Giles Townes, his father William Armistead Townes, his father Adolphus Townes, then Armisted Terrell Townes, John Townes, William Richard Townes and James Robert Townes (who emigrated from England). Beyond that is a mystery.
I believe the William that is listed as William I here is one of my grandfathers, Williiam Richard Townes. But there is a little confusion (including that is wife is listed as Ann Childers in some sources and Rececca Clarke in others.)
I've worked most on Family Search. They don't allow people to view trees by living indiividuals, but if you're a member you can see most of my Townes Tree by looking up Peyton Giles Townes (died 1985) an viewing his tree.
Any info or otehr commebts would be appreciated. If you want any otehr info let me know.
John Townes
I'm not sure if you are aware, but there is a Towne Family Association for descendants of William and Joanna Towne. They have William Townes and Obedience Allen listed in their documentation but said they have not been able to confirm this even after years of investigation by a professional researcher in England. They are actively recruiting males from the southern Townes line for DNA testing to see if they can come up with a connection. So far they haven't. If you will email me I will be glad to forward this email to you. With you being a male Townes you should be a good candidate for the Y DNA testing. I know from my Kirkpatrick line I have been told it goes back 13-15 generations.
I really would like to work with you to solve this. I spent at least two hours the last two evenings reading the genealogy journals. I have put everything on the profile and it's not very organized. I wanted to get it out there in hopes someone can contribute more.
Also, I believe the connections on the Townes profiles after James Townes and Ann Pride are not correct and should probably be marked that they are uncertain.
Thanks!
Thanks for having a big heart and adopting the Orphaned Profiles. This After Adopting Orphans FAQ explains the special attention adopted profiles will sometimes need.
Let me know if you have any questions on how to find and record sources, merge duplicates, clean up gedcom biographies, and interpret the Suggestions report. I'm here to help!

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!
Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working with members of the projects which coordinate them is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.
Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus. Review the project pages for special guidelines and to learn how to collaborate with the project members.
Let me know if you have trouble finding projects which fit your focus. Click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page.
Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles you manage, or edit. (See:https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Pre-1700_Profiles#Cite_reliable_sources).

As you have been a member of WikiTree for a few weeks now, I thought I would check in to see how you are getting on with the site.
Has the New Member How-To been helpful, or left you with any questions?
I am here to help with any problems or queries you may have. To contact me, be sure to use the "reply" link for this comment so that I will be notified. Alternatively, you can click my name to visit my profile, where you can send a private message, or post a comment on my profile page.
Sometimes links don't work in emails. If that's happened to you, check the public comments on your profile. The links will work from there.

PS Have you noticed that you can click on Tags to see others interested in that surname, or location?
Thanks for starting to add profiles -- your contributions will go a long way to joining the world together! Before you get along too far, please review how to add sources.
Sources are very important here on Wikitree. It is how we show where we got the info and help others find it too. The easiest way to find sources is to use the handy RootsSearch link on the right side of any profile. There are links to over 20 genealogy websites. I recommend starting with FamilySearch. Once you find a correct source, just copy and paste the citation provided into the profile. This can go at the end or use the inline citation tool to add it to the biography. It is a box with a C in it above the Edit Text box (when you are in edit mode).
I have added a marriage source for Mary Ellen Moore and her husband to give you an example. Hope that helps!

P.S. If links do not work in an email from WikiTree, try them from the comment section on your profile page.
Thank you for adding your DNA Test to your profile on WikiTree. Getting Started with DNA will tell you more about how DNA kits are used on WikiTree.
DNA at WikiTree provides a visual way for you to find others who have tested and have the potential of having common ancestors. It normally takes 24 hours from adding a test, or adding a new ancestor, or ancestor’s descendant, for WikiTree to display your name and test results on your ancestors and their descendants’ profiles for potential cousins to compare results with.
Have fun!

I am happy to congratulate you for upgrading, you are all set to be able to add and edit profiles now! To help save you time, energy and frustration, please start with our New Member How-To pages.
Click the green Tag on your top left of your profile page and see others following the same things you are researching. The more Tags (20 is the maximum) you add that include locations, periods of history or other genealogical interests, the more information that will come in the emails of WikiTree Genealogy Feeds and will provide more information about your community research options.
Welcome to the WikiTree family! If you have questions about how WikiTree works, please let me know. You can use the "reply" link under this comment or click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page.
