Jeff Smith was born in 1834 in Scott County, Mississippi, to John Jackson Smith and Margaret Butler. He was the eighth of twelve children. About 1852, he married Jane Byrne, a young neighbor living with his uncle, Landon Butler's, family. His father was said to have strongly disapproved and possibly disinherited him. Their first child, Laura, was born in 1853. In early 1855, they emigrated to Texas with his sister, Ann, her husband, Silas McCabe, and family. His second daughter, Cora, was born in DeWitt County that spring. In 1856, his father bought land in Bosque County, Texas, and sent his son Burton and his bride, Jenny, with a group of slaves to clear land and build houses for the family. Burton died suddenly that summer, and Silas McCabe and Jeff went to Bosque County to manage affairs there.
