Biography

Leoluca Petranella is born and baptized on 17 October 1855 in Corleone. He is the son of Francesco Paolo Petranella and Biagia Riina. His godparents are Gioachino Riina and Maria Antonia Mannina, who are both unmarried.[1]

Luca Petranella came to America when he was 27 (1856), with his sisters, Maria age 20 (1863) and Arcangela age 17 (1866). They left the Port of Palermo, Sicilia, Italia and arrived at Castle Garden, In the Port of New York, on October 11, 1883 on the ship Archimede. The captain of the ship was Domenico Viola. Luca's occupation was listed as a farmer. His sister Maria was listed as a seamstress. They then traveled south by steamer and railway to Bryan. Their last name was spelled as Petronella on the ship's manifest. When he and Mary Marino were married in 1899, Michael (Mike) Pomaro and Josephine Barta were witnesses to their wedding. Father P. L. Pelmer performed the ceremony.

In the 1900 federal census of Brazos County, Texas, outside Bryan, taken 28 June, Luke Petronella, 47, born in April 1853, heads a household with his wife Mary, 24, born in February 1876, and children Frank, 8, born in August 1891, Biagia, 5, (recorded erroneously as a son) born in February 1895, ]Rose, 4 (erroneously entered as a son named Ross), born in March 1896, Bonney (daughter) 2, born in March 1898, and Benedetto, seven months, born in April 1900. Luke and his wife are from Italy and his children were born in Texas. Mary has had one child, who is living. Luke emigrated in 1886 and Mary in 1895.

Their neighbor (on the previous sheet) is Dominick Mauro, whose son, Luke, is an early member of the Dallas Mafia. On both this sheet and the previous are several Ruffino families. Ruffino is Luke’s first wife’s name.[2]

In the 1920 federal census of Justice Precinct 4, Brazos, TX, taken 26 January:

Luke Patronella, 62 (b. 1858), heads a household on Madisonville or Skurten Road with his wife Mary, 42 (b. 1878). They emigrated in 1884 and 1897 respectively. At home are their children Ben, 19 (b. 1901), Luke Jr., 17 (b. 1903), Lena, 15 (b. 1905), Joe, 13 (b. 1907), Nick, 11 (b. 1909), Mary, 9 (b. 1911), and Johnnie (daughter), 4 (b. 1916). The parents were born in Italy and the children in Texas. Luke is a farmer working on a home farm on his own account. Five oldest children are farm laborers.

Their close neighbors include the John Carrabba family (on the same sheet) and Mary's brother, Charlie Marino, on the previous sheet of the census.[3]

Luca died in 1943, at the family farm four miles north of Bryan, Brazos County, Texas on Kurten Road. After his death his sons took Luke as their middle name. His birth record cites DOB as October 17, 1855, while his gravemarker cites September 5, 1851 and his name as Luke Patranella.

Patranella-106 and Petranella-59 appear to represent the same person because: I accidentally created a duplicate profile. Petranella-59 is more accurate and should be preserved.
