Philippe Neville was the third daughter of Ralph Neville, K.G., 1st Earl of Westmoreland, and Margaret Stafford.[1][2][3] Her birthplace is unknown and her birth date is estimated based on her husband's birth date.
Marriage and Children
Philippe married Thomas Dacre, Knt., 6th Lord Dacre of Gilsland (or Gillesland),[4] son and heir of Sir William Dacre, 5th Lord Dacre of Gilsland, and Joan de Douglas, before 20 July 1399.[1][3]
Her husband was born at Naworth Castle, Cumberland, 27 October 1387,[1] making him age 12 or younger at the time of marriage. This is a reminder that marriages were often arranged as matters of economic and political alliance between families well before the children were of age.
They had eight sons and two daughters:
John, Knt., living 1439, dead by c. 1454[1] (not named in Magna Carta Ancestry)
Thomas, Knt., predeceased his father, married Elizabeth Bowet and had issue,[1] Joan, who was suo jure Baroness Dacre[3]
Randolph, Knt., 1st Lord Dacre (of Gilsland/[of the North]),[1] died without issue 29 March 1461 at the Battle of Towton, married Eleanor FitzHugh; was attainted [posthumously?] with brother Humphrey in 1461/2 (reversed in 1472/3)[5]
Humphrey, Knt., 2nd Lord Dacre (of Gilsland/[of the North]), died 30 May 1485, married Mabel Parr and had issue;[1] including Thomas, 3rd Lord Dacre; was attainted with brother Thomas in 1461/2 (reversed in 1472/3)[5]
Joan or Jane, married Thomas Clifford, 8th Lord Clifford,[1] and had issue; Joan died before May 1453[6]
Margaret, wife of John le Scrope;[1] she survived her husband, who died without issue 18 September 1452[7]
Inheritance
Philippe was a legatee in the 1440 will of her father.[1]
Death
Philippe Neville was living 8 July 1453 but predeceased her husband, who died 5 January 1458.[1][3]
Research Notes
Disputed Child
Elizabeth Dacre was disconnected as a child of Philippe and Thomas as no proof has been found for the connection.
