Biography

Wilfred Humphrey Mosley was born on April 10, 1883 on Gibraltar, and his birth was registered there on May 9. 1883. He was a son of Alexander Mosley and Maria de la Mercedes Josefa Emmanuela Luisa Francia Mosley.

At the time of the UK census in 1901, we can identify Wilfred living (as a boarder) at 13 The Crescent, Folkstone, Kent, England. The record states that he is 17 years of age and a "Candidate for Sandhurst" (the British military academy near Camberley, Surrey).

On August 24, 1904, Wilfred was appointed as a Lieutenant in the Wiltshire Regiment (a promotion from his prior rank of 2nd Lieutenant). He was still holding that rank in 1908.

On May 1, 1916, Wilfred was again promoted -- from Captain to Temporary Major -- during World War I. And prior to his marriage, later that year, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and transferred to the Machine Gun Corps.

On December 13, 1916, Wilfred married Edith Mary Josephine Douglas Dick at Brompton Oratory, Kensington, London. They would have a single daughter.

In 1927, when Wilfred and his wife and family arrive back in England from a visit to Gibraltar (aboard the "Rajputana"), they list their destination in England as South Lodge, Portsmouth Road, Camberley, Surrey, which is very close to Sandhurst. Did Wilfred have an appointment at Sandhurst between the two World Wars?

In the late 1930s Wilfred appears to be living at an apartment on Pont Street in Chelsea. Was he still working in London during the week? In the 1939 Register of England and Wales (just before World War II) Wilfred is living on Pont Street and states that he is "Of private means".

In early 1946, Wilfred is living with his daughter Ursula at 7 Windsor Court, Jubilee Place, Chelsea. London.

Wilfred passed away on March 14, 1949, at Marble House, 15 Bomb House Lane, Gibraltar. However, according to the probate of his will, his residence at the time of his death is said to have been at Knightsbridge House, Headley, near Newbury, Berkshire, England.
