Biography

To the Pursuit and love History and Trivia

For those that were born, lived and died in the mid to late 19th Century--it was neither--easy or safe in America, least of all for those that had large families - my family history is no exception. During Mirriah's lifetime (1864-1930), she would experience the birth of 7 children (all but 1 lived to adulthood). Our pioneering families ate what they grew or butchered themselves (fast food was considered "farm to table"). They grew their own vegetables, butchered their own meat, canned their own jams & vegetables. They might experience disease without cures, Indian attacks, droughts, fires, poverty, wars, family members lost or traumatically injured during wars, and laws that restricted their livelihood (especially for girls/women and minorities). She would live through the reconstruction era (1865-1877), market revolution (early 1800's-1900's) (changed how women were perceived in the market place), girls/women would experience gender inequality (schooling wasn't always necessary for a girl & it wasn't until the 1800's that girls would go to school regularly but mainly for reading religious studies (the early 1900's changed the idea of schooling for many of my female family members), the doctrine of coverture (common law in which a married woman's legal existence was considered to be merged with that of her husband) was enforced until the middle of the 19th Century, but men could still beat/rape their wives until laws were enacted in the 1970's), the Industrial Revolution (inventions would be patented that made a women's homelife easier) and the Great Depression of 1929 (1929-1939). Her immediate family or relatives might be a veteran (as a Veteran, I thank all those that served on the field and off the field) of the Civil War (1861-1865), World War I (1914-1919). During her life, families were dying from apoplexy, diphtheria (alias bladder in throat), dropsy, Inanition (malnutrition), influenza, milk sickness, puerperal fever, rickets, ship fever or epidemic typhus, TB, tetanus, typhoid fever, whooping cough and yellow fever (alias American plague & Bronze John). Also during her lifetime, there were 16 Presidents, Lincoln was in his 3rd year when Mirriah was born and would die 1 year later, (3 would be assassinated: Lincoln 1865, Garfield 1881 & McKinley 1901). Laws/Acts would eventually be passed that made living in America easier/happier (at least on paper), Emancipation Act of 1862 (Slavery), Homestead Act of 1862 (home ownership), 16th Amendment (Right for Congress to Levy Income Tax)-1913, 19th Amendment (Woman's Right to Vote-1919).

When Mirriah (Louvenia) Morgan Milburn was born in Oct 1864 in Graves, Kentucky, her father, John, was 46, and her mother, Mary, was 43.

She was the proud 7th daughter and 12th child born to John Baxter Morgan and Mary Susan Lambert.

She married James David Milburn in 1882 in Kentucky. They had seven children in 13 years (six made it to adulthood)

She died on 29 May 1930, in her hometown at the age of 65, and was buried in Paducah, Kentucky.[1]
