Biography

Lunenburg County Mourns Passing of Capt. Adam Knickle; The Former Warden of Lunenburg Municipality Was 94 Years Old^[1]

Captain Adam Knickle, Grand Old Man of Heckman's Island, Lunenburg County passed away suddenly at his home on Tuesday afternoon, having passed the 94th milestone of life's journey on September 13th of the present year.^[2]

A pioneer of the Lunenburg fishing industry, also tiller of the soil on his island home, Captain Knickle possessed many natural endowments which were well developed during the years and which won him a host of friends and made him a leader as Councillor and Warden Municipal affairs for many years, where his wise counsel was recognized as a valuable asset.

Captain Knickle's wife and only daughter Mary, predeceased him a number of years ago, and is survived by one son Wilfred, who resides on the homestead. Also a step-sister Miss Mary Maxner of Boston, Mass.

Also surviving are four grandchildren, Mrs. John Fowler and Mrs. Clyde Isnor of Halifax and Richard and Lewis Knickle of Heckman's Island, and 3 great grandchildren.

The funeral will take place on Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from Sweeny's Funeral Parlor, Lunenburg under the supervision of Rising Sun Lodge, I.O.O.F. of which Captain Knickle was a member for more than fifty years. The service at the Funeral home will be conducted by Rev. E.B.S. Miller of Central United church where the Knickle family worshipped. The Oddfellows will conduct their rites at the graveside and interment will be in Hillcrest cemetery.

Notes

The house lot on Heckman's Island where Samuel and Annis Whynacht were living (at least later in life) was transferred to them in 1958 by Lewis Knickle. Lewis was the grandson of Adam Knickle and inherited the property through will from Adam. Adam had been Samuel and Annis's next door neighbour on the 1921 census.^[3]
