Always willing to help out with Nova Scotian genealogy. Especially in Western Cape Breton (Route 19 in particular) and also Lunenburg County as I have lots of experience with these two areas. I am familiar with most of the province as a geographer though, so if you have questions let me know!

I've had an interest in genealogy since the first time I laid eyes on a family tree that my older Sister made for a History project. I think I was about 7 or 8 years old at that time. No idea why that memory sticks in my head, it's just one of those things!

I started taking the job of family genealogist seriously in about 2017. I am one of the lucky ones, as all 4 of my Grandparents were still living and able to contribute valuable information to my research (my grandfather Frank has since passed on). With the family genealogy relatively complete I dove in and really started doing genealogy on all kinds of profiles around Nova Scotia, Canada.

Notes

  • Feel free to contact me for professional Genealogical assistance. I am a certified Records Searcher for and specialize in Nova Scotia
  • Working with the Acadian Project, although my research has been focused entirely on the North East Margaree area.. there happened to be a transcribed Parish register at this location and it seemed a shame no one had organized it online
  • My on/off again project at this time is a "Carto-genealogy" project which is a linking of Crown Land Index sheets for the province with Wikitree profiles
  • Also trying to digitize the Mabou Pioneers genealogy text written by my Great Grand Uncle, Father AD MacDonald Mabou Pioneers Project Space

Hello Keenan: Your name caught my eye because you are listed as sponsoring Mary MacDougall. I believe I am part of the convoluted family she appears to come from for the following reasons: I believe her brother or half-brother was Donald McDougall (1819/1822 in Nova Scotia and 18May1893 in Chicago), who was my gr gr grandfather (Donald to John Alexander to Harry Willis to Willis Clayton, my father). I have a copy of his will in which he mentions his brother, Allen (b.1833 Pictou NS d. 28June 1909 Chicago) and John Alex ? possibly ( b. 1820 N.S.). He names a niece, Marcella, and a nephew, Allen McDonald. Donald was in New Haven, Ct. by 1850 as I've seen LDS microfiche showing his marriage there to Jane Baird in Jan. 1850. They had three sons, John Alexander (my gr grandfather), Charles and William G. What led me to Mary MacDougall was a speculative link between my Donald and Angus Ban McDougall and Christina MacDonald although the dates seem to indicate a missing generation. On Ancestry thru lines, however, I am linked to Angus Ban with 26 DNA links and to Christina MacDonald with 27 DNA links. I don't suppose you have any suggestions for me to find documentation about the parents of Donald? I have found nothing in Nova Scotia though he and his son, John Alexander, fill out every form for place of birth with "Nova Scotia" or "Neva Scotia." I have many documents for him in the U.S. but that won't lead me to his parentage. I thank you for any suggestions you might make.

Hi Bonnie, I'd be happy to take a look at this. May not have time this weekend, but I will check back on this through next week!

So appreciative! Today I discovered that I have 26 DNA matches from Donald McDougall (1808-1875), a son of Angus Ban who had about 12 children. On a list of his children, I find Allen McDougall (1836 in Nova Scotia-1909 Chicago) who is one of the brothers Donald (1819/1822 in Nova Scotia-1893 Chicago) lists in his will.

Bonnie can you tell me which Mary MacDougall you were referencing here? I think I have about 12 different ones in the wikitree profiles I manage.

Keenan, this is what made me focus on your name: Mary MacDougall abt 1790 Malignant Cove, Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada - Privacy Level: Open (White) MacDougall-1039 edit managed by Keenan Sutherland

Hi Bonnie, after a bit of research here I think this is the wrong MacDougall family, however there is another MacDougall family at Cape George - literally like 10 minutes away by car - within that family we have some Marsellas and Allens appearing. I suspect passed down as family names. I will see if I can verify anything. These two families of course, could be related.

Thanks for your help. I am somewhat resigned to having her as a brick wall. I wonder if Ernst is a married name. There is nothing in my family records to say that she was previously married, but the complete lack of possible Ernst females from Lunenburg is suspicious.

Good catch! Hopefully, the rest of my comment will be more reliable.

Nina, there does not appear to be anything in the church transcription I have, but there is a genealogy (the Descendants of Christian Ernst) which I believe is held at the Mahone Bay Museum. If you were to look them up they could give you a hand! I will see if I can get ahold of the copy as well.

Unfortunately no record of this Maria marrying in the genealogies that have been published. Not looking good for finding a proper connection.

Hi Keenan,

I am hoping that you can help me with some Lunenburg information. I have been trying, for quite some time, to find out about the early life of Mariah Ernst Banks. Banks-341. I have solid info from her marriage onward, but anything before that is speculation. I'm hoping a fresh pair of eyes and some local knowledge will point me to some resources. I've been wondering if there was a religion change at her marriage or some other undesirable issue to sever links with her family. Of course, poor record keeping could be to blame... Nina

posted by Nina Pyne
Hi Nina, I'm assuming you mean Ernst-341 and not Banks-341 (who looks to be born in Indiana) (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Ernst-341).

I will have a look at some materials and see if anything makes sense!

Hi Jeanne Stein - your name frequently shows up as a shared match with my Hebridean Island DNA matches. My Gedmatch Kit is ER3344830.

Do you know which branch of your family you have in common with *Hughie MK7463763, Trisha Kelly WC2252011, Jonathan Farrell UL5175735, Gordon MacKinnon TA4246866 or *NannyHelen A947980? They seem to be related to me through Tiree, but I don't know how.

My direct Tiree surnames are Campbell (2 branches), MacMillan and MacLean. My direct Skye surnames are MacKinnon and MacInnes (many different spellings for each). My Skye ancestors emigrated to Australia, where I have MANY DNA cousins who have Skye ancestors with those surnames. (One of them seems have married a MacLeod.)

Hi Keenan, Thank you for editing the profile pages for my gg grandfather Lauchlin Jamieson (1126) ! I have my suspicions that Lauchlin and Godfrey Jamieson were brothers or cousins as I match DNA with Jamiesons from PEI and have Godfrey as their ancestors. The paperwork is not there though.

Sincerely, Jeanne Jamieson Stein

Hi Jeanne,

I was hopeful you might respond! I will continue to work on this family and try to find the paperwork to link them properly.. there is definitely a relationship. They may not be brothers, but I would guess something like 1st cousins is not out of the question.

The problem of course is that they started to drift apart immediately after arriving in the early 1800s. But they all settled within an area that today is about a half an hour car drive. It'll be a matter of putting together the pieces, but hopefully I can come up with something!

Greetings from Toronto! I was wondering if you would be able to provide me with any information that could help me track my genealogy. Most (if not all) of my family is from Inverness. The names of my great-grandparents are Cassie MacIsaac and Ronald MacIntyre, they had 14 children, one being my grandfather, Hugh Alexander (Sandy) Macintyre. I also have reason to believe the spelling was changed from Mc to Mac somewhere down the line. Any help would be appreciated, thank you very much for the contributions you have made to this site, it has been very helpful 🙂
posted by Mitchell MacIntyre
Hi Mitchell, I absolutely am willing to help. If that Cassie happens to be the correct one we're related through the MacIsaacs as well haha. Small world in Inverness for sure (I was born and grew up there). I am sad to hear of Sandy's passing. While I'm not a big fan of the fiddle myself I do recognize his name from around the county that's for sure.

Edit: at a glance it appears that the Catherine you were looking at is probably not the same one. However her father is a John MacIsaac from the Banks so there is still a strong possibility of relation.

Do you know if this MacIntyre family is in the Mabou Pioneers or History of Inverness County books? I will start looking into this, no promises for results immediately as I'll be headed home for the Holidays soon. The problem right now is the Library Archives Canada website had a security breach of some kind and the historic Census reports are down. So tracing families has been quite difficult! Whenever that is resolved I will try to give you some good information.

Mitchell if you trace back from Sandy now you should have a tree back to the original MacIntyres who settled Cape Mabou about 1815. I found that I had worked on this family extensively at another time trying to parse out how they were all related. Looks relatively complete now although there are still lots of holes.

I haven't added to this since I started connecting the names and birthdays of each MacIntyre all the way up if there is an anomonly I would remove it from the tree until I had sufficient and consistent documentation. I have been in contact with my great aunts and uncles who still live in Inverness to this day to verify all the data and check headstones in Inverness. I can assure you that Sandy MacIntyre, along with his 13 brothers and sisters were born in Inverness, lived on Central Ave, their parents were Cassy MacIsaac and Ronald R MacIntyre, son to Ranold L McIntyre and Ann McDougald. I have a picture of ranold and Ann that have been varified by their remaining grandchildren. Again, all of this is accurate to cunsus records from 1871+ as well as birth, baptisms, deaths, and war records. Fun fact, it was my great grandfather who legally changed his name to Ronald MACintyre from Ranold MCintyre during his time in the first world war, it infuriated his father and held it against him for a long time. A few of my great aunts and uncles have recently changed it back to Mc, but I'm fine with Mac. Long story short, my family comes from Broad Cove Banks, Inverness. This dates back accurately to at least 1818, when a John McIntyre and his father of the same name came to Broad Cove from PEI. That is were my tree is currently. I hope this was helpful, and if there is anything else I can help you with please don't hesitate to ask

Hey Debi!

Shouldn't be a problem for me. I adopted these because I have access to the appropriate resources for these Nova Scotia settlers. Already started sorting about the duplicates and unsourced profiles.

Hi again,

I just wanted to suggest that you edit the sources you are adding to the profiles created. They seem to have insufficient data, for example "1881 census" with no identifiers is not adequate. It does not tell anyone where the census was taken a is recorded.

For more information see Sources.
