George was born in 1873 [1] in Derby Township, Grey County, Ontario, where his father was a farmer. He was the son of Samuel Horton and Maggie Miller, one of their eight children. George was clearly born with the middle name Edwin but his death record lists his middle name as Edward. In addition both his obituary and Find A Grave listing state he was born 15 June 1874. The birth record is accurate. All the listings of other births surrounding it are for 1873. Usually George was known as George Horton or George E. Horton. He attended Northern Business College in Owen Sound, then worked in the Post Office there. Around 1900, he moved alone to Winnipeg, Manitoba where he first found work as a bookkeeper, then engaged in selling real estate. He must have liked the bustling new city as he convinced other family members to join him. His parents, two sisters and a nephew lived with him in the 1906 census. Later George was associated with Canada Life Assurance. George married Margaret Raine in Winnipeg in 1909 and the couple had two daughters ( Edith Margaret, Gladys Evelyn ) and two sons (George Raymond, Garland Miller). George retired in 1957 and he and wife Margaret moved to Vancouver, British Columbia. He died there in 1960 and was buried in Capilano View Cemetery.
