John Alexander Hewlett was born 28 June 1843 in the Bahama Islands to Townsend Edmund Hewlett and Sarah Ann Key Hewlett.
He married twice: first, 30 November 1859, to Priscilla Key, daughter of Nathan Key Jr. and Charlotte Russell Key; and second, about 1865, to Susan Rocilli Weatherford Saunders, daughter of Albert Augustus Saunders and Isabella Weatherford.
John and Priscilla had two sons - John Jr. and William - but only John survived his infancy. Susan and John had children Charles Elbert, Susan Agnes, Emma, Joseph, Townsend, Minnie, and Dolly Mae Hewlett.
In 1870, John and Susan Hewlett moved with their small children to Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York. John's father, Townsend, had an inheritance from his aunt; and Townsend's children were left bequests from his brothers, Divine and Charles, and sister, Martha Jane Hewlett. He was a farmer.
John A Hewlett died 23 October 1919 in Hempstead, New York and was buried at Bethpage Cemetery, Farmingdale, Nassau, County, New York. He was 76 years of age.
