Chris Hemken was born on 20 Oct 1889 in Walshville, Montgomery Co., Illinois as the sixth child of Egge Jansen Hemken-17 and Emma Anna Maria Elizabeth Strohkirch-2. He had five siblings, namely: Elizabeth "Lizzie", George, Anna, William, and Henry. He served in the military (US Army, WWI).
When he was 21, he married Etna Maude Curry, daughter of Edwin Hodge Curry and Elizabeth Johnson, in 1911. They had three children.
