Biography

Susan was born on 14 Dec 1840 in Troup County, Georgia to Moses John Hardin and Sarah Capers Christian. Her birth date is on her tombstone. Her siblings were Richard C. Hardin (1836-1861); Mariann Hardin (1838-1856); William Christian Hardin (1846-1938; and Asbury "Turk" Jenkins Hardin (1851-1925).

The 1850 Census shows her as 10 and she lived with her family in Negro Heel, Harris County, Georgia. Her siblings were: Richard (14); Mariann (12); and William C. (3). [1]

Her sister Mariann Hardin first married Kendrick McDonald King Brady, on 9 Jan 1856 in Harris County, Ga., who just went by King Brady. [2] Mariann died months after they were married and King then married Susan Hardin on 30 Apr 1857 in Harris County, Georgia. [3] I have the impression that Moses was a rather surrogate father for King since King's father was killed when he was less than a year old. Their children were:

Charles A. "Charlie" Brady (1859-1889) Moses Brady (1861-1945) Mary Eulalie Brady [Gideon] (1868-1920) Ella C. Brady (1869-) died as an infant Sarah "Sallie" Jenkins [Mayfield] (1873-1972) Walter Amos Brady (1877-1946

The 1860 census, shows Susan (20), husband King (30) and a I year old infant. unnamed. Her father died in 1859. Her brother Richard was killed in the Civil War in 1861. King also fought in the Civil War and did some time in a Yankee prisoner of war camp. He enlisted on 12 May 1862 and was a Private in the 4th Infantry. He was imprisoned on 2 Apr 1865 in Petersburg, Virginia. He was released on 24 Jun 1865 at Point Lookout, Maryland. I'm sure times were hard for her with 2 small children during the war. [4]

The 1870 Census shows King (40) and Susan (30) in Gordon, Georgia with a Post Office in Sugar Valley. Children: Charlie 11, Moses 8, Eulalie 2, and Ella 6 months. [5]

The 1880 Census shows the family in Precinct 4 of Hood County, Texas. The ages are off as they show Susan as 36, King (Called Henry in the Census) as 51; Charles 21; Moses 18; Mary Eulalie 10; Sarah 6; and Amos (Walter) is 2. They lived in an unincorporated town called Fall Creek Community. It is still unincorporated today. Most all of them are buried in the Fall Creek Community Cemetery which is very nicely kept and people from that community are still buried there. It is still a strong farm community a few miles away from Granbury, Texas. What was left of Susan's family followed them to Texas. King got land that was relatively close to Elizabeth Crockett's property. She was given her pick of land in Texas for Davy's service in the Texas War for Independence. Elizabeth is buried in a cemetery about 6 miles down the road in Acton. I am told they still had Indian troubles, which they did not leave behind in Georgia. [6]

The 1900 Census shows King 70 and Susan 59. Moses is the last child at home and he is 22. Their son Charlie had already died and his wife remarried and moved away to South Texas. It shows 2 of Charlie's children Susan 14, and Mike 11 on the Census. For some reason, Jack is not listed even though he is growing up there. [7]

By 1910, Susan is a widow and 69 and it looks like Walter (33) is living with her. She owns the farm and is still working. [8]

The 1920 shows Susan 79 and Moses 57 living with her. [9]

?The 1930 Census shows her living with her daughter Sarah in Morgan Mills, in Erath County which is still very close. That probably happened sometime between 1930 and 1935. [10]

She applied again as a widow for King's Confederate pension on 12 June 1930. She had lived in Texas fo 60 years at that point. I don't know if it was approved or not. [11]

Her death certificate says she died of cardiac insufficiency and senility. The Texas death Index says she passed away on 8 Aug 1935 in Erath County but is buried next to King in Fall Creek Cemetery. I'm certain her life was a hard one and I'm thankful for her. [12] [13] [14]

Many of the family relationships are from the Judge Henry Davis Papers. He was an old Judge in Granbury who used to just copy census and other records and it is a good idea that he did since many are now missing. He knew the old families and even shed light on some things we did not know. They are an amazing gift available at the Granbury Historical Society. They also have old Plat maps that show where people's land was and we learned so much there.
