Biography

King McDonald Brady was born 12 Nov 1829 [on his tombstone] in Stewart County, Georgia. His fall name on the guardianship papers is Kendrick McDonald King Brady. Every document I have seen seems to just have King. He was the only child of Nathan Brady and Leviniah Lunsford. He was about 1yr and 3 mos. old when his father was killed. [1] [Nathan was shot to death by a rogue Indian and there are many obits. One is in the Democrat, Columbus Georgia, 5 Mar 1831]. The History of Stewart County, Georgia Vol II by Sara Robertson Dixon p.120 also has an abstract the Guardianship document of King the Orphan of Nathan.

4 Nov 1852, his grandfather, Enoch Lunsford's land was seized and King bought it as high bidder at a sheriff's sale for $750 for his Uncle George Lunsford and his family to live on reasoning that had the land not been seized, it would have been for their rightful use. Bibb Deed Book L, p. 666.

His first wife was Marianna Hardin and they married on October 31, 1855 in Harris County, Georgia. [2] She died in March 1856. They were only married for five months and they had no children.

He married Marianne's sister, Susan Hardin on 30. Apr 1857 in Harris County, Georgia. [3] Their children were: Charles, Moses, Mary Eulalie, Sarah "Sallie", Walter Amos.

22 Sep 1857, Edward Christian sold King Brady lots 403 and 404 for $1000 in the 20th District. [Deed Book 3 page 367].

In the 1860 Census, King was 30, wife Susan 22 and a one year old infant unnamed living in Harris County, Georgia. [4] [5]

The 1860 slave schedule showed they had (1) 10 year old slave girl. [6]

In Sep 1860 an ad appeared in the Harris County Enterprise (newspaper) advertising an Executors' Sale. The sale was to take place the first Tuesday in November next between legal hours of sale, the following lands belonging to the estate of Moses J. Hardin. Lot 408 containing two hundred and two and half acres; A fraction of 414 containing forty-eight acres; and one island #7 containing 22 acres all lying in the 20th district of Muscogee now Harris county to be sold for the benefit of the creditors and legatees of said deceased, terms cash. King Brady, Executor

He enlisted in the confederate army on 12 May 1862. He served as a private in Co. D, 4th Georgia Infantry under Captain Cherry. He served 2 years in the Confederate Army and was a prisoner of war the last 6 months of the war. He was imprisoned 2 Apr 1865 in Petersburg, Virginia. He was described as having white complexion, dark brown hair, and gray eyes. He was from Harris County Georgia and a farmer. He was released at Point Lookout, Maryland on 24 Jun 1865. [7] [8] [9] [10] [11]

In the book, Georgia Salt Lists 1862, transcribed by Sherry Harris, she reveals that many soldiers for the Confederacy were paid in salt. It shows that Mrs. King Brady was paid in 1863 and 1864 as wives of soldiers now in service. We have to understand salt was a precious commodity and in short supply because of the war. A lot came from Europe, but the war hampered that and they had to find sources here. Salt was used for everything from preserving meat, setting dyes in homespun, fertilizer in some cases and the killing of weeds in others. Hides were tanned with salt. Without salt, there would be no shoes, clothes, or leather products. Farm animals needed it to survive. High demand and short supply meant there was corruption as well. That is why the government made lists for those who were eligible.

8 Dec 1866, KIng sold to Ophelia Christian 180 acres [lots 403 and part of 404] in Harris County, Georgia. [Deed Book K, p. 218].

In the 1870 Census, King is 40, wife Susan is 30, Children: Charlie (11), Moses (8), Eulalie (2), and Ella C. is 6 months. They are living in Gordon, Georgia. [12]

Eventually, the family moved to Texas and settled into Hood County in North Texas. Susan's family moved to different parts of Texas. King bought property and worked as a farmer in Hood County. His property was close to Elizabeth Crockett's property that she was given by the State of Texas because of David's service to Texas at the Alamo.

The 1880 Census shows King 51 and wife Susan 36. Children: Charles was 21, Moses 18, Mary E. 10, Sarah 6, Walter Amos 2, all living in Precinct 4, Hood, Texas. King is a farmer. Sometime between 1870 and 1880, Ella C. died. [13]

The 1900 Census shows King 70, wife Susan 59, Children: Moses 22, Susan 14, and grandson Mike 11 living in Justice Precinct 1, Hood County. Charlie died 6 Apr 1889. King is still a farmer and owns his own home. [14]

He did apply for a Confederate Pension on 6 Jan 1903, but it was denied. [15]

He passed away in 1906 at 77 in Fall Creek Community, Hood County, Texas and is buried in Fall Creek Cemetery. [16]

Susan applied again in 1930 for King's Confederate Pension. I don't know if it was approved or not. [17]

I might have a male Brady from Mike!

NOTING for yDNA potential testers for this King McDonald Brady line: Neither his son Moses or his son Walter Amos appear to have sons who survive to adulthood. Therefore, any chance of a yDNA tester for this line will have to be from the one other son Charles Brady (1859-1889). Of the two known sons this Charles Brady then has -- Jack Brady and Mike Brady -- only Mike Brady (1888-1976) appears to have living grandsons (Edited to add - may have found desc of Jack also?) and therefore a very few potential yDNA testers exist for this line.

Please contact me if you are one of these yDNA testers or are in contact with one. The Brady yDNA Project needs a yDNA tester from this specific line to aid us in properly placing this Brady line.

Thank you, Elizabeth R Brady
