Biography

Levi was born about 1726 to John Gilliam and Sarah his wife.

It has been said that Levi married Elizabeth, the daughter of Thomas Newsom, since Levi and Elizabeth sold land patented to Thomas in 1762, that Thomas had patented in 1756. However, Levi did not inherit this land from Thomas but purchased it from John Mangum.

Albemarle Parish records give the births of some children of Levi and Elizabeth (listed in the records as "Eliza"): [1]

  • Priscilla Gilliam, born 4 Feb 1749. (Her father's name is mistranscribed as Lewis Gilliam, but the original document shows Levi Gilliam.)[2]
  • Lucy Gilliam, born 13 Oct 1751.
  • Anselm Gilliam, born 5 Feb 1754.
  • Harris Gilliam, born 22 Apr 1756.
  • Levi Gilliam, born 23 Jun 1758.
  • Sally Gilliam, christened 16 Aug 1761.

Levi made his will in Sussex County. His son, Levi, was already dead leaving widow, Frances, who was then pregnant. The elder Levi mentioned 2 daughters, Lucy Wilborne and Sally Johnson, and left Priscilla Jordan—apparently his daughter—one dollar (will dated 27 Aug.1801 and proved 4 Feb. 1802). [3]
