As far as I can tell, I'm 12th generation American. So far, all known lines go back to Colonial times - North Carolina and Virginia. Hoping to find out more.

Hello Mike,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Pre-1700 ancestors can be shared by many descendants, so collaboration is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

The United States Project may fit your research focus. If not, use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find other possibilities. Review the project page to learn about resources and guidelines as well as how to collaborate with the project members.

Have questions? Ask in the comments section of my profile.

Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles that you manage or edit. (See: Pre-1700 Reliable Sources).

Hi -

Thanks for offering to help.

A couple of questions:

1) Look at Elliott-17818, my grandfather. I currently have no picture of him but I have a scanned newspaper article about his death (by suicide) which I want to have associated with his profile. What I did was probably incorrect, as it shows up as his profile photo. How should I have done this?

2) I have some scanned census pages which show information about multiple people, obviously, since they're organized by household. I would like to reference these in individual profiles. It doesn't make sense to me that I should upload multiple copies of the same document. How should I handle this?

Never mind. I figured it out on my own. Sorry for the bother

Hi, Michael!

I am pleased to welcome you to the WikiTree family, your contributions will go a long way to joining the world together.

It is best to start with the New Member How-To pages, they will save you a lot of time and frustration. Have a look at our Sources page it is also helpful.

You mentioned that you don’t know much about your family tree yet. I assume you are new to genealogy. No problem! Every genealogist is a beginner at some point.

Take your time, keep track of sources, and ask questions. Check here for tips.

I am here to answer any question you have, no matter how trivial you may think it is. There is no such thing as a silly question. Please add as much information as you can, it all helps to turn a “name” back into a person. I hope you enjoy the site as much as I do.

See you in the branches.

Actually I know a great deal about my family tree - I'm at least 12th generation American. However, the bullet list only allows a few selections and all the others were even more misleading so I did the best I could.

Well, that is wonderful news. It is always good when you already have a lot of information. It can be a little hard when filling out anything that gives you limited choices. It is good to know that you have made it that far back.

Something a bit unexpected happened when I added my first wife as a spouse. She appears as "Living Roberts" which seems unnecessarily restrictive. Is this to be expected or can I provide more visibility?

Hi Mike,

That is automatic privacy protection because she is living and not a member. If you want her to show and she is okay with that, then go to her profile. Click on the Privacy tab and scroll down to where it says "Add to Trusted List" add her email and send it to her. When you receive it she can click the link that will bring her to WikiTree to login and create a password. Once you add her to the Trusted List the you need to click 'Add as Manager' by her name in the privacy tab. You will also still be a manager. Once she has accepted the invite and is at least a Guest member you can change her privacy setting. I hope that helps. If you have any other questions let me know,
