Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Burwell Gilliam was a Virginia colonist.

Burwell was born in 1720 and died about 1800.

Burwell Gilliam married Ann Johnson, daughter of Moses Johnson who mentioned granddaughter Ann Gilliam, daughter of Burwell Gilliam, in his 1763 will in Sussex County.

Burwell and Ann sold all the land he inherited from his father, John Gilliam, to Waddell Johnson of St. Andrew’s Parish, Brunswick County, in 1763.

They were evidently preparing to move to North Carolina.

In the 1790 census Burwell was in Northampton, North Carolina, United States. [1]

Burwell left a will in Northampton County, N.C., naming children Adams Gilliam, Patty Folks, Frankie Gale, William, Wyatt, and Moses Gilliam, Nancy Norwood, Rebecca Alley, and grandson Burwell Gilliam, the son of Wyatt. His wife, Nancy, was an executor (will dated 13 Nov. 1799 and proved Sept. 1800). [2]
